LAFAYETTE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING SATURDAY NIGHT IN WHICH A MAN WAS INJURED.  OFFICERS BELIEVE THE SHOOTING HAPPENED IN THE ROAD AT THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH HAMMER AVENUE AND GEORGIA STREET AT AROUND 8:30 SATURDAY NIGHT.  THE MAN WAS SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES.  HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND WAS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION.

 

A DERIDDER MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED FOR TRYING TO SOLICIT A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM OHIO.  SHERIFF’S OFFICE DETECTIVES IN OHIO BEGAN MONITORING THE ONLINE ACTIVITY OF 20-YEAR-OLD NILES SAMUEL VINCENS EADY WITH THE GIRL ON SATURDAY, AND HE WAS ARRESTED AT A DERIDDER HOTEL, WHERE HE WAS TRYING TO GET THE GIRL TO MEET HIM.  THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE IN OHIO UNCOVERED PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND EXPLICIT CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN EADY AND THE GIRL.  EADY HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH COMPUTER AIDED SOLICITATION OF A MINOR, PORNOGRAPHY INVOLVING JUVENILES AND INDECENT BEHAVIOR WITH A JUVENILE.

Louisiana’s latest Political Hall of Fame inductees will include the state’s only “first gentleman,” the brother of former Gov. Edwin Edwards and an ex-lawmaker.

The 2019 additions include Raymond “Coach” Blanco, a political adviser, pollster and husband of former Gov. Kathleen Blanco who was known as “first gentleman” when she was in office.  Also on the list are Marion Edwards, who oversaw fundraising and campaign operations for his brother Edwin Edwards and other candidates; former Lt. Gov. Paul Hardy; former legislator and broadcaster Ron Gomez; and business titan Richard Zuschlag.  News outlets report the group will be inducted Feb. 23 at an event held at the Cajundome Convention Center in Lafayette.

 

Lafayette Parish School Superintendent Donald Aguillard says he’s calling it quits.

Aguillard says he’ll retire at the end of his contract on May 17. He’s been the superintendent since May 2015.  He says he believes the next superintendent will be able to build on the foundation that he and the board have established.

 

SULPHUR POLICE ARE ASKING THE PUBLIC’S HELP IN FINDING A HIT-AND-RUN SUSPECT WHO DAMAGED A TRAFFIC LIGHT BOX.  POLICE NOTICED THAT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT WAS OUT AT THE INTERSECTION OF BEGLIS PARKWAY AND HIGHWAY 90 AND THAT’S WHEN THEY FOUND THE DAMAGED LIGHT BOX.  OFFICERS FOUND PARTS OF THE VEHICLE THAT HIT IT AND DETERMINED IT CAME FROM A 2015 TO 2017 CHEVY SILVERADO H-D 25-HUNDRED OR 35-HUNDRED PICKUP.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL THE SULPHUR POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

A RAYNE FAMILY LOST ALL THEIR POSSESSIONS AND TWO DOGS IN A HOUSE FIRE YESTERDAY.  THE HOUSE WAS LOCATED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF WEST BRANCH STREET AND LIVE OAK.  THE FAMILY IS IN NEED OF CLOTHING AS WELL AS PERSONAL AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS.  DONATIONS CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT 908 OLGA STREET IN RAYNE.

 

Louisiana is receiving a $1.2 million, three-year federal grant to assist child victims of human trafficking.  Gov. John Bel Edwards and his wife Donna announced the grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime at an event Wednesday. The money will help create the Louisiana Child Trafficking Collaborative, a network of resources to combat juvenile trafficking.

The Democratic governor said human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the state and nation.
