A U-L student who fabricated a report about being assaulted following Donald Trump’s election has been issued a summons for criminal mischief.  The Advocate reports 18-year-old Khadija Altamimi reported being attacked near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus Wednesday by two men — one wearing a white “Trump” hat — who yelled ethnic slurs and then stole her wallet and hijab head covering.  Lafayette Police records released Friday show Altamimi was issued a misdemeanor summons for criminal mischief, which carries up to a $500 fine and 30 days in jail. She was not arrested.

 

THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE WILL BE BUILDING A MARINE OPERATIONS CENTER ON PORT OF LAKE CHARLES PROPERTY.  THE PORT BOARD EARLIER THIS MONTH APPROVED A LEASE AGREEMENT FOR THE CENTER, WHICH SHERIFF TONY MANCUSO SAYS WILL LIKELY BE COMPLETED WITHIN FOUR YEARS.  HE SAYS THE CENTER WILL ALLOW THEM TO BETTER RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES ON THE WATER.  PORT BOARD PRESIDENT BILL RASE SAYS IT’S GOOD TO HAVE A PRESENCE BY THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE ON THE PORT.

Gov. John Bel Edwards is asking a Baton Rouge court to define the role of Louisiana’s attorney general — laying out what he can and can’t do in state government.  NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the Edwards administration’s request comes in response to Attorney General Jeff Landry’s decision to sue the governor.  Landry is trying to block Edwards’ executive order that bans discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in state government. The governor and attorney general have a Wednesday court appearance on the issue.

 

A Louisiana university football coach has disciplined four players in response to a locker room video showing members of the team dancing and singing the lyrics of a profane rap song against president elect Donald Trump.  The Advertiser reports the video was made sometime shortly before Tuesday’s election in which Trump was elected president.  University of Louisiana at Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said Thursday he was disappointed in a few players’ immature behaviors that they demonstrated in the locker room.  Hudspeth said he does not condone that type of behavior and does not represent the entire team.

 

Call it “honor stitching.”  For the past three years the Gilded Ladies quilting club in Sulphur has sewn together quilts for veterans in their area.  The group meets weekly to sew the quilts, which one member likened to a “hug.”  Another member, C.J. Long, said the majority of the quilts have been given away to World War II or Vietnam veterans although a few Friday are destined for veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq.

 

BREAUX BRIDGE POLICE RELEASED THE IDENTITY OF A PERSON WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED THURSDAY NIGHT.  THE BODY OF 24-YEAR-OLD MIGUEL EDMOND WAS FOUND IN A VEHICLE AT ABOUT TEN P-M THAT NIGHT, WHICH WAS LOCATED IN THE 600 BLOCK OF TINA STREET.  INVESTIGATORS ARE TREATING HIS DEATH AS A HOMOCIDE.  POLICE CHIEF ROLLIE CANTU SAYS THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY SUSPECTS AT THIS TIME.

 

Louisiana residents with damage from the severe mid-August flooding have only a few hours remaining to register for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The deadline is today.  FEMA offers grants to homeowners and renters for temporary housing and home repairs, as well as other post-disaster expenses.

Registration with FEMA can be done online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362, downloading the FEMA mobile app or visiting a federal disaster recovery center in the community.
