Armand “Mondo” Duplantis of Lafayette broke his own pole vault world record Monday night at the Olympics, clearing 20 feet, 6 inches, to cap his second straight gold-medal performance on the sport’s biggest stage. Duplantis cleared the mark on his third and final try. It marked the ninth time the Louisiana-born 24-year-old, who competes for his mother’s native Sweden, has broken the record, but the first time at the Olympics.
Louisiana’s attorney general has announced that she is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to overturn the state’s new law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom by Jan. 1. The Republican said that she is not aware of any school districts that have begun to implement the mandate as the the posters haven’t been produced and handed out to schools yet. Attorney General Liz Murrill said that brief, which was not immediately available, explains that “the lawsuit is premature and the plaintiffs cannot prove that they have any actual injury” since the posters are not hung up yet.

THE SUSPECT IN A JEANERETTE STANDOFF THAT RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF LAFAYETTE POLICE OFFICER SEGUS (SEEJUHS) JOLIVETTE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH FIVE UNRELATED CRIMES IN SAINT MARY PARISH. THIRTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD NYJAL HURST WAS BOOKED INTO THE SAINT MARY PARISH JAIL ON CHARGES OF AGGRAVATED DOMESTIC ABUSE CHILD ENDANGERMENT, ARMED ROBBERY, CARJACKING, AGGRAVATED BATTERY AND ILLEGAL USE OF WEAPONS OR DANGEROUS INSTRUMENTALITIES. THE STANDOFF HAPPENED ON JULY TWENTY-FIFTH WHEN THE JEANERETTE CITY MARSHAL ATTEMPTED TO SERVE ARREST WARRANTS TO HURST AT A HOME ON MARTIN LUTHER KING DRIVE. STATE POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THE STANDOFF AND HAVE NOT CHARGED HURST IN CONNECTION TO IT.
THE FAMILY OF NINETEEN-MONTH-OLD KACI CYPRIAN HELD A VIGIL AT PA DAVIS PARK IN LAFAYETTE TO MARK THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HER DEATH. SHE WAS KILLED IN AN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING ON SOUTH GENERAL MARSHALL STREET IN LAFAYETTE AND THIRTY-YEAR-OLD JOHN NICHOLAS HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER. THE FAMILY OF KACI SAY THEY ARE STILL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AS TO WHAT HAPPENED. THEY HAVE REQUESTED BODY CAMERA FOOTAGE BE RELEASED TO THEM, BUT THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS DENIED THEIR REQUEST UNTIL THE CASE HAS BEEN JUDGED.

AN EDMOND, OKLAHOMA MAN WAS ARRESTED AND BROUGHT TO ACADIA PARISH TO FACE TWO COUNTS OF MOLESTATION. FIFTY-YEAR-OLD BRIAN RICH IS ACCUSED OF INAPPROPRIATELY TOUCHING A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS WHILE VISITING THE VICTIM’S FAMILY. THE ALLEGED INCIDENTS HAPPENED SEVERAL YEARS AGO. RICH WAS ARRESTED TWO YEARS AGO AFTER A SURVEILLANCE CAMERA SHOWED HIM PEEKING INTO THE WINDOW OF A TEENAGER IN EDMOND.
