A TRAFFIC STOP ON AMBASSADOR CAFFERY BY LAFAYETTE POLICE YESTERDAY MORNING LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF A TRUNK FULL OF MARIJUANA. TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD KEVIN JOSEPH BATISTE OF LAFAYETTE WAS PULLED OVER FOR AN IMPROPER LANE CHANGE AND SERGEANT ROBIN GREEN SAYS, WHEN THE OFFICERS OPENED THE TRUNK, THEY FOUND FORTY-TWO POUNDS OF MARIJUANA. BATISTE AND HIS TWO PASSENGERS WERE ALL CHARGED WITH POSSESSION WITH THE INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE A SCHEDULE ONE DRUG. ONE OF THE PASSENGERS, TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD DEVONTE JAMAL FRANCOIS OF BREAUX BRIDGE, WAS ALSO CITED FOR RESISTING AN OFFICER.

A top senior staff member for Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards has announced his resignation. Matthew Block has been the Democratic governor’s top lawyer. The Advocate said Block has played a vital behind-the-scenes role in navigating through the pandemic, hurricanes, and expanding Medicaid. Edwards announced that Tina Vanichchagorn, the administration’s special counsel, will replace Block.

THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN TWO THOUSAND SEVEN PASSED A BILL CREATING THE CULTURAL DISTRICTS TO SPARK REVITALIZATION BASED ON CULTURAL ACTIVITY THROUGH TAX INCENTIVES, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND RESOURCES. IN THESE DISTRICTS, RENOVATION ON HISTORIC BUILDINGS MAY QUALIFY FOR STATE HISTORIC TAX CREDITS AND QUALIFYING WORKS OF ORIGINAL ARTS ARE EXEMPT FROM LOCAL SALES TAXES. THE NEW CULTURAL DISTRCTS IN ACADIA PARISH ARE THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL HISTORIC DISTRICT IN CROWLEY AND THE POINTE-AUX-LOUPS CULTURAL DISTRICT IN IOTA.
Three energy corporations are partnering on a carbon- capture project with the hopes of dramatically reducing industrial carbon dioxide emissions in Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Wednesday. Captured emissions from the CF Industries ammonia production plant in Donaldsonville will be transported through EnLink Midstream’s existing pipeline network and “injected into deep, underground geologic formations” on ExxonMobiil property in Vermillion Parish. Officials say they aim to move 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually — equivalent to what would be produced by nearly 431,000 gas-powered cars driven for one year.
