THE LAFAYETTE MUNICIPAL FIRE AND POLICE CIVIL SERVICE BOARD UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A THIRTY-DAY EXTENSION FOR THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT TO FIND MORE CANDIDATES FOR THE POLICE CHIEF POSITION. THE APPLICATION WINDOW WAS SLATED TO CLOSE ON MAY EIGHTEENTH. BOARD MEMBER PAUL MOUTON SAYS FOUR APPLICATIONS HAD BEEN SUBMITTED AS OF WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT’S CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, CYDRA WINGERTER, SAYS MAYOR PRESIDENT JOSH GUILLORY IS IN TALKS WITH A POLICE SEARCH FIRM THAT WOULD HELP WITH VETTING CANDIDATES AS WELL AS ATTRACTING NEW CANDIDATES.
HEATH HULIN HAS BEEN ELECTED BY THE IBERIA PARISH SCHOOL BOARD TO TAKE OVER AS THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT. HULIN HAS WORKED IN THE IBERIA PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS INCLUDING, MOST RECENTLY, AS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT. HE’LL BE REPLACING CAREY LAVIOLETTE, WHO IS RETIRING. LAVIOLETTE SAYS SHE’S KNOWN HULIN SINCE THEY WERE KIDS AND IS RELIEVED THAT THE DISTRICT IS IN GOOD HANDS.
LAKE CHARLES POLICE HAVE MADE TWO ARRESTS IN CONNECTION WITH A DOUBLE HOMOCIDE THAT HAPPENED MARCH TWENTY-FIFTH ON EAST LAGRANGE STREET. POLICE SAY THE VICTIMS, BOTH FROM HOUSTON, TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD JAMES JOHNSON AND EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD JACOB YARBROUGH, WERE SHOT AND KILLED DURING A DRUG TRANSACTION. POLICE HAVE ARRESTED TWENTY-YEAR-OLD JAMARCUS MILLER, WHO WAS ALREADY IN JAIL ACCUSED OF A SEPARATE SHOOTING, AND WHO IS NOW LOOKING AT TWO COUNTS OF SECOND-DEGREE MURDER. ALSO ARRESTED IS NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD ZYTERIUS ANDERSON ON PRINCIPAL TO TWO COUNTS OF SECOND-DEGREE MURDER.
Louisiana’s House of Representatives is preparing to debate a bill making abortion a homicide and subjecting women who get abortions to criminal prosecution and prison. The bill has brought opposition from Louisiana’s governor and groups including Louisiana Right to Life and the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops. The bill was introduced in March. It’s come under high scrutiny in light of last week’s leak of a draft of a U.S. Supreme Court opinion indicating the high court is preparing to overturn Roe V. Wade.
ADDITIONAL LANES HAVE BEEN OPENED ON KALISTE SALOOM ROAD IN LAFAYETTE FROM AMBASSADOR CAFFERY SOUTH TO MEYERS DRIVE. THERE ARE NOW TWO SOUTHBOUND LANES IN THAT STRETCH, A CENTER TURN LANE, AND ONE NORTHBOUND LANE. THE SECOND NORTHBOUND LANE WILL BE OPENED NO EARLIER THAN LATE THIS MONTH BECAUSE CREWS ARE WORKING TO INSTALL STREET LIGHTS AND ARE FLUSHING AND VACUUMING STORM DRAINS. ONCE THE SECOND NORTHBOUND LANE IS OPEN, WORK TO WIDEN THE REMAINDER OF KALISTE SALOOM TO E. BROUSSARD ROAD WILL CONTINUE.
A hospital in Louisiana’s largest system is giving Louisiana State University at Eunice $698,000 to expand allied health programs. Ochsner Lafayette General says it wants to boost the nursing and surgical technology programs at the college. Officials say both programs will be able to add students to courses that start in August. The nursing program will be able to add 30 and the surgical technology program will add 24.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue is reminding people that the state income tax filing deadline is almost here. The deadline is Monday, and anyone who wants an extension must ask before then. Taxpayers can file their returns electronically through Louisiana File Online, the state’s free web portal for individual tax filers. They can also submit their returns using commercially available tax preparation software, or they can print and mail state returns, which are available at revenue-dot-louisiana-dot-gov-slash-Forms.
