A 24-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS SHOT TO DEATH MONDAY NIGHT NEAR THE M-L-K CENTER IN LAFAYETTE.  MEGAN KELLY REPORTS.

TWO JEFF DAVIS PARISH DEPUTIES AND SEVEN INMATES AT THE JEFF DAVIS JAIL HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE BEATING OF ANOTHER INMATE.  THAT INMATE, FACING FIRST DEGREE RAPE CHARGES, WAS BEATEN LAST WEDNESDAY AND HAS BEEN MOVED TO ANOTHER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY AFTER GETTING TREATMENT AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL.  DURING AN INVESTIGATION, DETECTIVES LEARNED, THROUGH INTERVIEWS WITH INMATES AND SECURITY VIDEO, THAT DEPUTIES JASON ANTHONY CARTWRIGHT AND JOHN KURTZ ALLEGEDLY WERE INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING OF THE BEATING.  CARTWRIGHT AND KURTZ HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH MALFEASANCE IN OFFICE AND SECOND DEGREE BATTERY AND ARE BEING HELD IN A DIFFERENT CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

 

THE BODY OF U-L BASEBALL COACH TONY ROBICHAUX WAS BURIED YESTERDAY AT WOODLAWN CEMETARY IN HIS HOMETOWN OF CROWLEY.  MORE THAN 12-HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FUNERAL MASS HELD AT OUR LADY OF FATIMA CATHOLIC CHURCH IN LAFAYETTE.  FATHER BRYCE SIBLEY, WHO CONDUCTED THE MASS, SAID THE SIZE OF THE CROWD WAS A TESTIMONY TO THE LEGACY OF A GREAT MAN.  ROBICHAUX DIED LAST WEDNESDAY AFTER MULTIPLE HEART SURGERIES.

 

The advertising blitz in the race for Louisiana governor has begun, with Gov. John Bel Edwards releasing his first statewide TV ad of the election cycle.  The 30-second spot released Monday touts the Democratic incumbent’s financial stewardship and draws a contrast with the deficit-riddled years of his predecessor, Republican Bobby Jindal.  Edwards’ campaign described a sizable “seven-figure ad buy” that puts the 30-second spot in heavy rotation on both television and websites. The Deep South’s only Democratic governor faces two major GOP challengers on the Oct. 12 ballot: U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham and Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone.

 

YOUNGSVILLE POLICE CHIEF RICKY BOUDREAUX SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN DEALING WITH A BARRAGE OF CAR BURGLARIES.  HE TELLS KLFY TV THAT THEY ARE AT ABOUT AN EIGHTY-NINE PERCENT SOLVE RATE FOR VEHICLE BURGLARIES.  HE’S SUGGESTING THAT RESIDENTS WHO HAVE SURVEILLANCE VIDEO OF CAR BURGLARIES NOTIFY POLICE BEFORE POSTING THEM ON SOCIAL MEDIA.  HE SAYS IT LETS THE THIEVES KNOW THAT POLICE ARE AWARE THEY ARE IN THE AREA AND THEY GO UNDERGROUND.

 

A MAN, WHO LED POLICE ON A CHASE FROM BEAUMONT TO WESTLAKE YESTERDAY, HAS BEEN LINKED TO AN ENDANGERED, MISSING PERSONS CASE IN AUSTIN.  THE MAN, WHOSE NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED FLED WHEN JEFFERSON COUNTY DEPUTIES TRIED TO PULL HIM OVER FOR A TRAFFIC VIOLATION AT AROUND 11:39 YESTERDAY MORNING.  DURING THE CHASE, A PASSENGER VEHICLE AND 18-WHEELER WERE INVOLVED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT.  THE CHASE ENDED AT L-A 378 AND HOLLIS ROAD IN WESTLAKE WHEN THE SUSPECT STRUCK TWO LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLES.

 

AT LEAST TWENTY ACADIANA RESTAURANTS ARE PLANNING A PROTEST OF WAITR’S NEW PERFORMANCE BASED RATE STRUCTURE BY BOYCOTTING THE DELIVERY PLATFORM THIS SUNDAY.  ZEE BALOCH, WHO OWNS HOT FOOD EXPRESS, IS LEADING THE EFFORT AND TELLS THE ADVOCATE THEY ARE HOPING THE BOYCOTT WILL LET WAITR KNOW HOW THEY FEEL.  WAITR IS REQUIRING RESTAURANTS TO PAY A HIGHER COMMISSION AND THOSE WHO DON’T SIGN UP FOR THE NEW TERMS BY JULY 31ST WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE COMPANY’S PLATFORM.

 

The National Hurricane Center says a tropical depression is likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico by the end of the week.  Forecasters in Miami said Monday that a trough of low pressure over central Georgia is forecast to move southward toward the northeastern Gulf where a broad area of low pressure will form in a couple of days.  Lafayette Consolidated Government officials are making residents aware of two sites where they can get sandbags for free, which they have to fill themselves.  Those sites are the L-C-G Compost facility on Dugas Road, just off  North University, and the South District sandbag site at ten-seventeen Fortune Road in Youngsville.
