Even though Tropical Depression Barry did not unleash catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, many across the Gulf Coast were urged to take heed of tornado and flash-flood warnings Monday as the storm moved north.  Barry was downgraded from a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon but continued to pose a threat. Much of Louisiana and Mississippi were under flash-flood watches, as were parts of Arkansas, eastern Texas, western Tennessee and southeastern Missouri.  Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards urged residents to be cautious as they ventured outside after a weekend in which many had sheltered indoors.

Louisiana’s governor says he is “extremely grateful” that Tropical Depression Barry did not cause the disastrous floods that had earlier been forecast.  In a news conference Sunday evening, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Barry’s rains could have been much worse. He says the state is now better prepared for future storms.

Edwards says more than 90 people have been rescued from 11 parishes because of the storm.

A jury has recommended a 57-year-old man face the death penalty for killing a Louisiana State Trooper.  Prosecutors say an intoxicated Kevin Daigle shot the trooper in the head with a sawed off shotgun as the officer came to check on his truck which was stuck in a ditch in 2015.  Authorities say drivers passing by saw Daigle going through Trooper Steven Vincent’s pockets and subdued and handcuffed him after the shooting.  A judge will decide Daigle’s final sentence at a hearing in October.
