Gov. John Bel Edwards has ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff over the Louisiana State Capitol and all public buildings until sunset on Thursday to honor those killed or wounded in the mass shooting in Orlando.  Edwards issued the executive order Monday.  He says the state is ready to assist Florida if needed to help bring “justice for those whose lives were lost.”

A south Louisiana police chief says an inmate apparently tampered with the water system in the Patterson jail, touching off the sprinklers and causing a flood that briefly evacuated the facility.  Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle tells The Daily Review of Morgan City that the sprinklers filled the jail with about three inches of water Sunday evening.  He says the sprinklers were turned off once the jail was evacuated. LaSalle says inmates were back in their cells within three hours, and nobody was hurt.

AN EXPERT ON MANAGING ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS IS IN LAFAYETTE TO OFFER HIS INPUT ON A PROPOSAL TO END A BAN ON NEW BARS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA.  JIM PETERS OF THE RESPONSIBLE HOSPITALITY INSTITUTE TOLD THE ZONING COMMISSION LAST NIGHT THAT HE NEEDS TO LEARN MORE OF THE ISSUES LAFAYETTE FACES AND HEAR FROM LOCALS ABOUT POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.  BUT IN GENERAL, HE SAYS, A BAR BAN IS NOT A GOOD IDEA BECAUSE IT ENSURES BAD BARS REMAIN OPEN WHILE KEEPING OUT PROGRESSIVE ENTREPRENEURS.  PETERS WILL SPEAK AT A PUBLIC FORUM BEING HELD THIS EVENING FROM 5:30 TO 7:30 AT WAREHOUSE 535 ON GARFIELD STREET.

THE SULPHUR CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT WAS SCHEDULED TO VOTE ON SUSPENDING THE PERMITS FOR MUSIC AT THE QUAKER STEAK AND LUBE, BUT INSTEAD TABLED THE MATTER.  THE COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER THE ISSUE AGAIN AT THEIR AUGUST EIGHTH MEETING.  MAYOR CHRIS DUNCAN SAYS THIS GIVES THEM TIME TO WORK OUT A SOLUTION.  NEIGHBORING RESIDENTS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE MUSIC BEING TOO LOUD AT THE QUAKER STEAK AND LUBE.

Senators intend to stall efforts to clean up sales taxes unintentionally charged on items like school lunches and Girl Scout cookies, until House lawmakers agree to more taxes for next year’s budget than they’ve supported so far.  Sales tax increases passed in the chaotic final moments of a special session earlier this year swept in items that weren’t meant to be taxed. In the current tax session, the governor proposed to remove those taxes.  The chairman of the Senate tax committee, Democrat J.P. Morrell of New Orleans, said Monday he doesn’t intend to advance the cleanup measures until the House sends over more tax bill options.

A SUNSET MAN FACES FINES AND POSSIBLE JAIL TIME FOR KILLING AN ALLIGATOR DURING A CLOSED SEASON.  THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES ACTED ON A TIP WHEN THEY CITED 49-YEAR-OLD KENNETH ARCENEAUX FOR TAKING OR POSSESSING AN ALLIGATOR DURING A CLOSED SEASON AND INTENTIONAL CONCEALMENT OF ILLEGALLY TAKEN WILDLIFE.  AGENTS SHOWED UP AT ARCENEAUX’S HOME LAST FRIDAY AND FOUND THAT HE HAD HARVESTED A SIX FOOT ALLIGATOR IN CAMERON PARISH EARLIER THAT MORNING.  ARCENEAUX FACES UP TO A 950 DOLLAR FINE AND 120 DAYS IN JAIL FOR EACH OFFENSE.
