LOUISIANA STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  POLICE WERE CALLED TO A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE ON SHADY RIDGE LANE WHERE THEY FOUND TWO VICTIMS AND LEARNED THERE WAS A THIRD VICTIM WITH A SUSPECT, TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD DREVIAN DUGAS.  THE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING HAPPENED AS DUGAS ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE IN HIS VEHICLE.  DUGAS WAS DRIVING ERRATICALLY AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE ON KALISTE SALOOM ROAD.  DUGAS AND HIS THIRD VICTIM WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND ARE IN STABLE CONDITION, WHILE THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE THAT WAS HIT SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES.

 

THE DIRECTOR OF THE VILLE PLATTE HOUSING AUTHORITY RESIGNED AT THE BEGINNING OF APRIL AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF MISAPPROPRATION OF FUNDS.  BOARD MEMBER ARTHUR SAMPSON SAYS THEY ARE WORKING WITH ACCOUNTANTS TO CONDUCT A FULL INSPECTION OF THE BUDGET THAT INCLUDES AN AUDIT.  HE SAYS THE AUTHORITY’S BUDGET WAS IN THE RED IN MARCH AND OVER BUDGET AS WELL LAST NOVEMBER.  A BOARD MEETING WILL BE HELD TOMORROW AT THE HOUSING AUTHORITY TO DISCUSS THEIR NEXT ACTIONS.

 

CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES CHASED AFTER A RUNAWAY EMU OVER THE WEEKEND.  PHOTOS OF THE CHASE AND CAPTURE WERE POSTED ON THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE FACEBOOK PAGE.  THE EMU ESCAPED FROM A FARM.  DEPUTIES APPREHENDED THE EMU AND SAFELY RETURNED IT TO THE OWNER.

 

HOUSE BILL TEN BECAME EFFECTIVE ON APRIL TWENTY-NINTH REQUIRING PEOPLE SENTENCED FOR A CRIME TO SERVE AT LEAST EIGHTY PERCENT OF THEIR SENTENCE RATHER THAN TWENTY-FIVE OR THIRTY-FIVE PERCENT.  ATTORNEY AARON LAWRENCE SAYS THAT ANY OFFENSE DONE ON OR AFTER AUGUST FIRST WILL NOT ALLOW INMATES TO REDUCE THEIR SENTENCE WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR TIME.  HE SAYS IT WILL GREATLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF TIME ON PAROLE.  CHRIS JERKINS, THE WARDEN AT THE OUACHITA PARISH CORRECTIONAL CENTER, SAYS THIS COULD LEAD TO OVERCROWDING BUT, ON THE OTHER HAND, SOME INMATES COULD BENEFIT BY EARNING THEIR EDUCATIONAL CREDITS.

 

A SUSPECT IN A BANK ROBBERY IN BATON ROUGE LAST OCTOBER HAS TIES TO LAFAYETTE.  THE F-B-I IS SEARCHING FOR TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD JASMINE JOHNNIE, WHO IS BLACK, FIVE-TWO, ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY-FIVE POUNDS WITH A BUTTERFLY TATTOO ON HER NECK.  SHE WALKED INTO A BANK IN BATON ROUGE LAST OCTOBER AND DEMANDED CASH AFTER INFORMING A TELLER THAT SHE HAD A BOMB IN HER PURSE AND HER BOYFRIEND HAD AN A-K FORTY-SEVEN.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON HER CAN CALL THE FBI TIPS LINE AT 1-800-225-5324.

 

RAYNE POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A MAN IN CONNECTION WITH AN ARMED ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED ON APRIL TWENTY-SEVENTH.  FORTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD DEMOINE JOSEPH DECLOUETTE OF RAYNE AND ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED MAN ALLEGELDY ASSAULTED SOMEONE WITH A DANGEROUS WEAPON AT A CONVENIENCE STORE IN RAYNE.  THEY ARE ACCCUSED OF STEALING THE MAN’S KEYS FROM HIS VEHICLE.  ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE WHEREABOUTS OF DECLOUETTE IS URGED TO CALL THE RAYNE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

ALANAH POULLARD OF JENNINGS IS GRADUATING THIS MONTH AT THE AGE OF SIXTEEN AND HAS BEEN ACCEPTED INTO SIXTY COLLEGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.  POULLARD ALSO SAYS SHE HAS RECEIVED OVER A MILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS.  SHE TELLS KLFY TV THAT SHE HAS A PASSION FOR MEDICINE.  SHE PLANS ON ATTENDING L-S-U THIS FALL TO MAJOR IN MICROBIOLOGY AND WANTS TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL AFTER THAT TO BECOME A TRAUMA SURGEON.

 

THE SOLE TAX WHICH FUNDS LIBRARIES IN IBERIA PARISH FAILED RECENTLY.  LIBRARY DIRECTOR CARLA HOSTETTER TELLS THE ADVOCATE SHE BELIEVES IT WAS REJECTED BECAUSE OF LOW VOTER TURNOUT, A FAILURE BY THE LIBRARIES TO INFORM VOTERS AND THE DEMONIZATION OF LIBRARIES NATIONWIDE.  SHE’S HOPING A BIGGER TURNOUT IN THE GENERAL ELECTION WILL HELP IT PASS IF IT’S ON THE BALLOT.  IF IT FAILS AGAIN, SHE SAYS LIBRARIES IN THE PARISH WILL OPERATE ON THE MONEY THEY HAVE LEFT AND WILL CLOSE WHEN IT RUNS OUT.
