THERE WERE THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-NINE MORE CASES OF CORONAVIRUS IN YESTERDAY’S REPORT FROM THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. THE TOTAL IS NOW THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND THIRTY-EIGHT. THERE ARE EIGHTEEN MORE DEATHS IN THE STATE FOR A TOTAL OF TWO THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY-EIGHT. THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED WENT DOWN YESTERDAY BY TWENTY-SEVEN WHILE THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS ON VENTILATORS DROPPED BY SIX.
THERE WERE TWENTY-ONE MORE CASES OF CORONAVIRUS YESTERDAY IN ACADIANA, INCLUDING SEVEN IN LAFAYETTE PARISH, WHICH HAS ECLIPSED THE SIX HUNDRED MARK. THE TOTAL FOR THE REGION IS TWO THOUSAND, ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SIX. THERE WERE TWO ADDITIONAL DEATHS. BOTH HAPPENED IN IBERIA PARISH. THERE ARE A TOTAL OF ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-SIX DEATHS IN ACADIANA.
SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA HAD FIFTEEN MORE CASES OF CORONAVIRUS. THAT NUMBER MOSTLY CAME FROM ALLEN PARISH, WHICH ADDED THIRTEEN. THE TOTAL FOR THE REGION IS SEVEN-HUNDRED SEVENTY-EIGHT. FOR THE SEVENTH DAY IN A ROW, SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA SAW NO NEW DEATHS. THE TOTAL STANDS AT SIXTY.
TWO PEOPLE IN THE RICHARD COMMUNITY WERE KILLED IN WHAT APPEARED TO BE A ROBBERY, ACCORDING TO ACADIA PARISH SHERIFF K-P GIBSON. THE VICTIMS ARE JOHN B. GUILLORY AND LOIS M. GUILLORY, BOTH SEVENTY-ONE YEARS-OLD, WHO WERE RELATED, NOT MARRIED. IT APPEARS THE TWO, WHO LIVED IN THE FIVE HUNDRED BLOCK OF NOAH DAIGLE ROAD, WERE STABBED TO DEATH MONDAY NIGHT. SHERIFF GIBSON SAYS THAT RICHARD IS A QUIET COMMUNITY AND A CRIME OF THIS NATURE IS SHOCKING.
A bid to help legalize sports betting in Louisiana is steps from final legislative passage, though the wagering still would be a year or more away. The measure that won easy passage Tuesday from the House criminal justice committee would let voters in each parish determine on the Nov. 3 ballot whether to allow sports betting in that parish. Sen. Cameron Henry’s bill moves to the full House for debate. The Senate already overwhelmingly backed the idea from the Jefferson Parish Republican.
LAST NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE CITY AND PARISH COUNCILS APPROVED REALLOCATING A GRANT FROM HUD TOTALLING MORE THAN 850 THOUSAND DOLLARS, USING IT TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES INSTEAD OF FOR HOUSING ASSISTANCE. THE LAFAYETTE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY PLEDGED AN ADDITIONAL TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. BUSINESSES THAT HAVE NOT ALREADY RECEIVED ASSISTANCE WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE FUNDS WHICH WILL BE AVAILABLE AS SOON AS JUNE FIRST, IF APPROVED BY HUD. ANOTHER TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WILL BE GIVEN TO HOUSING ADVOCATES FOR RENT AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE.
YESTERDAY STATE POLICE TROOP D LEARNED THAT 64-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL JEFFREY CARTER OF WESTLAKE, WHO WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION ON MAY TENTH, DIED FROM HIS INJURIES. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON HIGHWAY NINETY WHEN 38-YEAR-OLD DERRICK JAMES BERTRAND OF IOWA CROSSED THE CENTER LINE INTO THE PATH OF CARTER’S VEHICLE. TOXICOLOGY SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM BOTH DRIVERS AND BOTH WERE FOUND TO BE INTOXICATED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THIS IS BERTRAND’S THIRD D-W-I ARREST. THERE HAVE BEEN THIRTEEN FATAL CRASHES IN THE TROOP D AREA THIS YEAR RESULTING IN FIFTEEN DEATHS.
