THE DIRECTOR OF ACADIAN SEARCH AND RESCUE SAYS SOMEONE IS USING THEIR NAME TO SCAM PEOPLE.  JEFF ISTRE SAYS THE PERSON IS OFFERING TO FIND THEIR LOST PET FOR A FEE.  ACADIAN SEARCH AND RESCUE, BASED OUT OF KAPLAN, IS OFFERING A ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR REWARD TO ANYONE WHO CAN IDENTIFY THE SCAMMER.  ISTRE SAYS THEY ARE GETTING CALLS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY BUT THEY BELIEVE THE SCAMMER IS LOCAL SINCE THE TASK FORCE IS NOT KNOWN NATIONALLY.

A WELSH MAN, WHO CALLED POLICE ABOUT TWO PEOPLE IN THE BED OF HIS TRUCK ATTEMPTING TO STEAL IT, WAS HIMSELF ARRESTED BY JEFF DAVIS PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES.  WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, THEY FOUND NO ONE IN THE TRUCK, BUT FORTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL HARDY, WHO WAS THE PERSON WHO MADE THE CALL, APPEARED TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF NARCOTICS AND MAY HAVE HALLUCINATED ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN HIS TRUCK.  IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT HARDY HAD SEVERAL OUTSTANDING FUGITIVE WARRANTS AGAINST HIM.  WHILE HE WAS BEING BOOKED INTO THE PARISH JAIL, POLICE FOUND NARCOTICS IN HIS PANTS.

With the Louisiana House’s approval, a bill that would ban gender transition procedures for minors is advancing to the Senate. The bill would prohibit doctors from performing procedures — such as hormone treatments, gender reassignment surgery or puberty-blocking drugs — on anyone under the age of 18 who is seeking treatment to alter their sex assigned at birth. The measure, which also establishes penalties for health professionals who provide such care, passed 71-24 mainly along party lines. At least 16 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender transition procedures for minors.

TWO ABORTION BILLS WERE VOTED DOWN TUESDAY IN THE LOUISIANA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.  THE HOUSE ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE VOTED SEVEN-TO-FIVE AGAINST A BILL THAT WOULD HAVE CLARIFIED THAT ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES CAN BE LEGALLY TREATED VIA SURGERY.  THE OTHER BILL, VOTED DOWN EIGHT-TO-FIVE, WOULD HAVE EXEMPTED MISCARRIAGES FROM THE ABORTION BAN.  LOUISIANA RIGHT TO LIFE DIRECTOR BEN CLAPPER TOLD THE ADVOCATE THAT THE TWO BILLS THAT FAILED WERE UNNECESSARY AND WOULD HAVE CAUSED ADDITIONAL CONFUSION.

AT A LAFAYETTE LIBRARY BOARD OF CONTROL MEETING MONDAY, THE IDEA OF LEASING EXISTING SPACE FOR A NORTHEAST REGIONAL LIBRARY BRANCH WAS RAISED AGAIN.  THAT’S DESPITE THE BOARD VOTING A YEAR AGO TO BUILD A NEW BRANCH RATHER THAN LEASING.  AT MONDAY’S MEETING, THE BOARD HEARD A PRESENTATION ON A POSSIBLE TRACT OF LAND FOR THE NORTHEAST REGIONAL LIBRARY, WHICH IS AT SHADOW BLUFF ROAD AND LOUISIANA AVENUE.  THE BOARD TOOK NO ACTION ON THE NORTHEAST REGIONAL PROJECT.

A BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE HAS LED SCHOOL OFFICIALS IN SAINT MARTIN PARISH TO CLOSE SCHOOLS THIS FRIDAY.  THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION… STEPHENSVILLE ELEMENTARY.  SUPERINTENDENT FREDERICK WILTZ SAYS A NUMBER OF DRIVERS ASKED FOR THE DAY OFF TO ATTEND THEIR CHILDREN’S GRADUATION THIS FRIDAY.  THE SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WILL STILL HAVE TO REPORT TO WORK AS USUAL.

A NEW SKATE PARK IS EXPECTED TO OPEN WITHIN THE NEXT MONTH IN CHURCH POINT.  IT IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND COST THE TOWN SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS, WHICH COMES PARTIALLY FROM DONATIONS.  ALSO COMING TO CHURCH POINT ARE TWO DETENTION PONDS, ONE NEAR MINIX ALY AND THE OTHER NEAR THE CORNER OF MAIN AND WEST CORPORATION STREETS, AND ITS EXPECTED TO TAKE AT LEAST A YEAR AS THE TOWN APPLIES FOR MORE GRANT MONEY.  MAYOR SPANKY MECHE TELLS KATC TV THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THEY HAVE NEEDED FOR AT LEAST THE LAST THREE DECADES.
