U-L LAFAYETTE FOOTBALL COACH MARK HUDSPETH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BRYAN MAGGARD HAVE ISSUED AN APOLOGY AND EXPRESSED THEIR DISAPPOINTMENT IN 13 PLAYERS, WHO WERE ARRESTED FOR CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT FELONY THEFT. THE U-L LAFAYETTE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS THE 13 ALLEGEDLY ENTERED A DORM ROOM IN HUGER HALL ON APRIL FIFTH AND TOOK SEVERAL ITEMS VALUED AT AROUND 24-HUNDRED DOLLARS. BOTH HUDSPETH AND MAGGARD SAY THEY WILL RESPECT THE LEGAL PROCESS. THE 13 PLAYERS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY FOR VIOLATING TEAM RULES.
CALCASIEU DISTRICT ATTORNEY JOHN DEROSIER SAYS A SULPHUR BUSINESSMAN HAS NOT PAID WHAT HE OWES AS PART OF A 2015 PLEA AGREEMENT. JOE PALERMO WAS SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS OF UNSUPERVISED RELEASE AND WAS TO PAY ONE-POINT-2 MILLION DOLLARS TO REIMBURSE THE STATE FOR THEIR COSTS TO INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE HIM. DEROSIER WAS TESTIFYING WEDNESDAY IN COURT DURING A HEARING TO DECIDE WHETHER A 13 COUNT INDICTMENT AGAINST PALERMO COULD BE UNSEALED. DEROSIER SAYS THE INDICTMENT WAS SEALED AS A PROFESSIONAL COURTESY BUT THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN THE INDICTMENT.

A federal judge has struck down a Louisiana law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have permission to admit patients to a nearby hospital, citing a Supreme Court decision against a similar Texas law. U.S. District Judge John deGravelles (duh-GRAV-uhl) had barred the state from enforcing the law in a preliminary order, but a federal appeals court overruled him. However, the state agreed to wait on enforcement. Since then, the nation’s highest court has overturned the same appeals court’s decision upholding the Texas law.

VILLE PLATTE POLICE HAVE ARRESTED A MAN IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTING DEATH OF 46-YEAR-OLD KATHY WESTON SUNDAY NIGHT. WESTON WAS WALKING TO THE STORE WHEN SHE WAS SHOT, AND HER FAMILY SAYS SHE WAS AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER CAUGHT IN CROSSFIRE. 19-YEAR-OLD TIBERRIOUS WILSON OF VILLE PLATTE WAS ARRESTED ON NUMEROUS CHARGES TUESDAY NIGHT, INCLUDING SECOND DEGREE MURDER, AND HIS BOND WAS SET AT ONE-POINT-4 MILLION DOLLARS. POLICE CHIEF NEAL LARTIGUE SAYS THE INVESTIGATION REMAINS ACTIVE AND ASKS ANYONE WITH INFORMATION TO CONTACT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
A push to ban corporal punishment in Louisiana public schools has edged forward in the state House. Republican Rep. Nancy Landry of Lafayette, chair of the House Education Committee, cast the tie-breaking decision Wednesday to move the bill out of committee. The 6-5 vote sends the proposal by Democratic Rep. Barbara Norton to the House floor for debate. Louisiana’s school boards association says 38 of the state’s 69 public school districts allow schools to use corporal punishment.
