THE IBERIA PARISH SCHOOL BOARD IS PARTNERING WITH CRIMESTOPPERS TO CREATE AN APP WHERE STUDENTS CAN SAFELY REPORT CRIMES. SUPERINTENDENT HEATH HULIN SAYS STUDENTS OFTEN WANT TO REPORT A CRIME BUT DON’T WANT TO BE SEEN TALKING TO THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL. CRIME STOPPERS WILL HAVE SOMEONE MONITORING THE SAFE SCHOOLS L-A APP FOR TIPS TWENTY-FOUR-SEVEN AND DETERMINE IF THE TIP’S LEGITIMATE AND IF IT NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. HULIN SAYS THE BOARD IS MOVING QUICKLY TO IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM SO STUDENT HAVE ACCESS TO THE APP BY THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

HOWEVER, THE DIOCESE WEBSITE SAID THE MONEY WILL BE FOR THE BUILDING OF A NEW SCHOOL IN SOUTH LAKE CHARLES. HIGGINS CLARIFIED HIS ANNOUNCEMENT BY SAYING IT’S UP TO THE SCHOOL, IN CONJUNCTION WITH FEMA, TO DETERMINE HOW AND WHERE THE FUNDS WILL BE USED.
LAFAYETTE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING THAT LEFT ONE PERSON DEAD. OFFICERS RESPONDING TO THE SCENE OF THE SHOOTING ON HARRISON DRIVE OFF OF MOSS STREET LEARNED THAT THE VICTIM HAD ALREADY BEEN DRIVEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE VICTIM, WHOSE NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, LATER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE SHOOTING IS ASKED TO CALL TWO-THREE-TWO-TIPS.
ABBEVILLE POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THREE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN A SHOOTING AT A MOTEL SIX ON VETERAN’S MEMORIAL DRIVE LATE THURSDAY NIGHT. ONE PERSON SUFFERRED A WOUND TO THE ARM AFTER THE SHOOTER FIRED ABOUT FIFTEEN ROUNDS AT HIM. THE VICTIM’S GIRLFRIEND AND THE MOTEL MANAGER WERE NEARLY HIT. THE SHOOTER AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE WERE SEEN LEAVING THE SCENE IN A BURGUNDY COLORED DODGE CHARGER WITH LICENSE PLATE T-H-X-EIGHT-SIX-TWO-ONE.
Louisiana crawfish are in demand despite a shortage of the mudbugs driven by last summer’s drought, extreme heat, saltwater intrusion on the Mississippi River and a hard winter freeze. The state is the nation’s top producer of crawfish, but last year harvested a fraction of what is typical in a season. Potential losses to the state’s crawfish industry are estimated to be nearly $140 million. Fans of crawfish are still buying and selling them, including at a crawfish festival in southeast Louisiana that was noticeably more expensive this week.

JOSHUA DUNBAR OF SAINT MARTINVILLE AND JAQUALYNE ETTIENE OF LAFAYETTE, BOTH TWENTY-FOUR-YEARS-OLD, USED PERSONAL INFORMATION TO GET CREDIT CARDS FROM SYNCHRONY BANK. ETTIENE CHARGED MORE THAN A HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR THOUSAND ON THE CARDS WHILE DUNBAR USED THE CARDS TO CHARGE MORE THAN SIXTY-SIX THOUSAND. BOTH WERE SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IN PRISON FOLLOWED BY A YEAR OF SUPERVISED RELEASE.
