The Louisiana House isn’t giving up yet on reaching a tax agreement to help close a nearly $1 billion budget gap. A day after lawmakers rejected a major sales tax bill, negotiations moved from the House floor to desks and side rooms. The House didn’t vote on any proposals yesterday, delaying all consideration of tax measures until today. House Speaker Taylor Barras told lawmakers that he believes “there is some room” for talks to continue.

PRINCIPALS AT SCHOOLS IN LAFAYETTE ARE REACHING OUT TO SCHOOLS AND FACULTY TO COORDINATE LOCAL PARTICIPATION.
LAKE CHARLES POLICE HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN A SHOOTING DEATH THAT HAPPENED EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING ON MEDORA STREET. 43-YEAR-OLD CHARLES RAY HENRY WAS THE VICTIM WHO DIED AFTER BEING TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. YESTERDAY EVENING THEY ARRESTED 27-YEAR-OLD FREDRICK FRANKLIN JUNIOR, WHO WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND NO BOND HAS YET BEEN SET.
HOMEOWNERS AND BUSINESSES IN VERMILLION PARISH COULD FACE FINES IF FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO TOO MANY FALSE ALARMS. THE FINE ON A FOURTH FALSE ALARM WOULD BE ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, 200 DOLLARS FOR A FIFTH ALARM, AND RISING FINES FOR ANY SUBSEQUENT ALARMS IN A ONE YEAR PERIOD. THE PARISH POLICE JURY PASSED THE ORDINANCE IN RESPONSE TO COMPLAINTS FROM FIRE DEPARTMENTS. MORE THAN HALF OF THE 564 FIRE CALLS IN THE PARISH WERE FALSE ALARMS IN 2016.
Louisiana lawmakers should require all state government agencies to have a policy banning sexual harassment that includes detailed procedures for reporting and investigating complaints and that requires annual anti-harassment training. That’s the recommendation released Thursday from a task force convened by Gov. John Bel Edwards to review existing guidelines for dealing with sexual misconduct allegations. The task force crafted a model policy. Edwards is expected to push the legislation suggested.
