A MAN FROM RAYNE HAS DIED AT THE RICHARD SAUSAGE PLANT IN CHURCH POINT.  POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN EMERGENCY CALL AT AROUND ONE-THIRTY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND THEY FOUND THE MAN HAD SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES IN AN ACCIDENT AT THE PLANT.  POLICE CHIEF DALE THIBODEAUX SAYS THEY ARE WITHHOLDING THE NAME OF THE PERSON KILLED OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE FAMILY.  HE SAYS AN INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.

 

AUTHORITIES IN LAFAYETTE PARISH RESPONDED TO A BOMB THREAT AT SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL YESTERDAY MORNING, BUT NOT ALL RESOURCES WERE AVAILABLE.  SYLVIA MASTERS EXPLAINS.

REPUBLICAN STATE REPRESENTATIVE DODIE HORTON FROM BOSSIER PARISH HAS INTRODUCED A BILL IN THE STATE HOUSE THAT WOULD PROHIBIT DISCUSSIONS OF L-G-B-T TOPICS IN THE CLASSROOM.  HOUSE BILL EIGHT-THIRTY-SEVEN WOULD KEEP TEACHERS AND EMPLOYEES FROM DISCUSSING OR INCORPORATING THOSE TOPICS INTO LESSONS FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHT GRADE CLASSES.  THE BILL WOULD ALSO PROHIBIT TEACHERS OR EMPLOYEES FROM DISCUSSING THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR GENDER IDENTITY THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE.  IT’S SIMILAR TO A BILL BEING CONSIDERED IN FLORIDA, WHICH HAS NOW BEEN INTRODUCED IN FIFTEEN OTHER STATES.

 

THE JEFF DAVIS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT THAT ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT JOHN HALL WILL OFFICIALLY BECOME THE NEXT SUPERINTENDENT.  HALL IS A NATIVE OF JENNINGS WHO BEGAN IN NINTEEN-NINETY-TWO AS A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER.  HE SAYS THEY HAVE EDUCATIONAL GAPS TO FILL BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND THEY HAVE STARTED GETTING SUPERVISORS INTO CLASSROOMS.  HALL REPLACES KIRK CREDEUR, WHO SERVED AS SUPERINTENDENT FOR JEFF DAVIS PARISH OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS.

 

FOUR OF FIVE JUVENILES, WHO ESCAPED FROM THE BRIDGE CITY CENTER FOR YOUTH, WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN OPELOUSAS YESTERDAY ALONG WITH TWO ADULTS.  THE JUVENILES ALLEGEDLY STOLE A TRUCK IN JEFFERSON PARISH AND FLIPPED THE TRUCK IN THE ONE HUNDRED BLOCK OF RICHARD ROAD IN THE OPELOUSAS AREA.  PEOPLE WERE SEEN RUNNING FROM THE TRUCK AND THE OPELOUSAS POLICE DEPARTMENT, ALONG WITH THE SAINT LANDRY PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND THE OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE, CAPTURED THE FOUR JUVENILES AND THE TWO ADULTS, THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD KEENAN GRICE AND EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD BRYSON LEMELLE.  THE LOCATION OF THE FIFTH JUVENILE ESCAPEE IS NOT KNOWN.

 

THE LAFAYETTE FIREFIGHTER, WHO LEAPT FROM AN I-TEN OVERPASS TO AVOID AN EIGHTEEN-WHEELER CRASHING INTO A FIRE TRUCK, WAS DISCHARGED YESTERDAY FROM THE HOSPITAL.  HAYNES HAD SURGERY TO REPAIR INJURIES SUFFERED IN THE FALL AND HE’LL SPEND THE REST OF HIS RECOVERY AT HOME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, ACCORDING TO FIRE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN ALTON TRAHAN.  HE SAYS HAYNES IS IN GOOD SPIRITS AND PROGRESSING WELL.  THE DRIVER OF THE EIGHTEEN-WHEELER, NATHAN A. MARTIN OF MISSISSIPPI, FACES SEVERAL CHARGES INCLUDING O-W-I FIRST OFFENSE, OPEN ALCOHOL CONTAINER AND VEHICULAR NEGLIGENT INJURING.

 

An appeals court has revived a Biden administration effort to account for potential damage from greenhouse gas emissions when creating rules for polluting industries. A Louisiana-based federal judge had blocked the so-called “social cost of carbon” policy saying its regulatory burdens would drive up energy prices. But a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel in New Orleans stayed that ruling in a decision dated Wednesday, saying any burdens are speculative. Louisiana’s attorney general is pursuing another appeal.

 

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES WERE HELD FOR A NEW LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER FOR SAINT MARTIN PARISH.  SHERIFF BECKET BREAUX SAYS THE EIGHTEEN THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT BUILDING WILL HOUSE THE DETECTIVE’S DIVISION ALONG WITH NARCOTICS AND PATROL TEAMS.  HE SAYS THEY WILL HAVE AN I-T LAB FOR FORENSICS INVESTIGATIONS AND A GYM FOR THE DEPUTIES.  CONSTRUCTION ON THE FACILITY IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
