Louisiana’s secretary of state’s race will be a two-person face-off between Republican Kyle Ardoin and Democrat Gwen Collins-Greenup in December.

The candidates to be Louisiana’s top elections official were the top vote-getters among nine vying for the job on Tuesday’s ballot. The runoff will be held Dec. 8.

The winner will fill the remaining year of the term of Republican Tom Schedler, who resigned in May after one of his employees sued him for sexual harassment.

 

ALL SIX LOUISIANA CONGRESSMEN WERE REELECTED TO OFFICE YESTERDAY.  THAT INCLUDES REPUBLICAN CLAY HIGGINS, WHO FACED SIX CHALLENGERS.  HIGGINS RECEIVED 56 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  HIS CLOSEST CHALLENGER WAS DEMOCRAT MIMI METHVIN, WHO HAD 18 PERCENT.

 

Supporters of a constitutional amendment ending split jury verdicts are celebrating their victory.  The amendment passed Tuesday. It ends 10-2 or 11-1 verdicts in felony cases.  The amendment was supported by a wide range of groups and individuals across the political spectrum.

 

YESTERDAY, THERE WERE A LOT OF RACES ACROSS ACADIANA BUT THE BIG NEWS CAME OUT OF LAFAYETTE PARISH LAST NIGHT AS THE CITY OF SCOTT WILL HAVE A NEW LEADER.  JEFF HORCHAK HAS THE DETAILS.

ALL THE PARISHES IN ACADIANA VOTED TO AUTHORIZE FANTASY SPORTS CONTESTS.  HOWEVER IN SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA, THREE PARISHES VOTED AGAINST:  JEFF DAVIS, ALLEN AND BEAUREGARD PARISHES.

 

IN CARENCRO, THERE IS A RUNOFF FOR MAYOR.  IT WILL BE BETWEEN GLENN BRASSEAUX AND CHARLOTTE STEMMANS CLAVIER.  IN BROUSSARD, THE NEW MAYOR IS RAY BOURQUE, WHO TOOK 89 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  HE SUCCEEDS CHARLES LANGLINAIS, WHO HOPED TO CONTINUE IN CITY ADMINISTRATION BY RUNNING FOR COUNCILMAN AT LARGE, BUT WAS EASILY DEFEATED BY JEFF DELAHOUSSAYE.

 

BOTH TAX PROPOSITIONS IN LAFAYETTE PARISH WERE SOUNDLY DEFEATED.  THEY ONLY GOT 26 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN USED TO FUND THE JAIL AND COURTHOUSE.  MAYOR PRESIDENT JOEL ROBIDEAUX HAD COME OUT AGAINST THE TAXES JUST DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION.

 

THE RACE TO BECOME THE NEXT MAYOR OF CROWLEY WILL COME DOWN TO A RUNOFF.  EZORA PROCTOR RECEIVED MOST OF THE VOTES WITH 29 PERCENT.  SHE WILL FACE OFF AGAINST FELLOW COUNCIL MEMBER TIM MONCEAUX TO SUCCEED RETIRING MAYOR GREG JONES.  MEANWHILE, POLICE CHIEF JIMMY BROUSSARD EASILY WON REELECTION, TAKING 62 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  THE INCUMBENTS IN RAYNE WON REELECTION.  MAYOR CHUCK ROBICHEAUX RECEIVED 57 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  POLICE CHIEF CARROLL STELLY NARROWLY WON, DEFEATING CHALLENGER EDDIE GUIDRY 51-49 PERCENT.  IN CHURCH POINT, THERE WILL BE RUNOFFS, WITH SPANKY MECHE AND GENE MALBROUGH FACING OFF FOR MAYOR WHILE DALE THIBODEAUX AND LEON THIBODEAUX ARE AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR POLICE CHIEF.

 

LONGTIME VERMILLION PARISH REPRESENTATIVE BOB HENSGENS IS THE NEW STATE SENATOR FOR DISTRICT 26.  THE REPUBLICAN TOOK 60 PERCENT OF THE VOTE LAST NIGHT, DEFEATING JEAN MENARD AND JERRY GASPARD.  HENSGENS IS REPLACING JONATHAN PERRY, WHO IS STEPPING DOWN TO JOIN THE THIRD CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEAL.

 

IN LAKE CHARLES, THERE WILL BE A RUNOFF FOR WARD THREE CITY MARSHAL.  VIC SALVADOR AND NATHAN KELLER EACH RECEIVED 24 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  THE WINNER WILL REPLACE THE RETIRING MARSHAL JOEY ALCEDE.

 

REPUBLICAN STUART MOSS IS THE NEW REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE 33RD DISTRICT, SUCCEEDING MIKE DANAHAY, WHO GAVE UP THE SEAT TO TAKE OVER AS MAYOR FOR SULPHUR.  THE TOWN OF IOWA WILL HAVE A NEW MAYOR.  THE INCUMBENT CAROL PONTHIEUX RECEIVED ONLY 19 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.  THERE WILL BE A RUNOFF NEXT MONTH BETWEEN PAUL HESSE AND ERROLL MARSHAL.
