LAFAYETTE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT AT AROUND 11:45. A 31-YEAR-OLD BLACK MAN SUFFERED A SINGLE GUNSHOT WOUND IN A PARKING LOT LOCATED IN THE 900 BLOCK OF SIMCOE STREET, ACCORDING TO POLICE SPOKESMAN KARL RATCLIFF.  THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO A HOSPITAL AND IS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION.  THE POLICE HAVE NO SUSPECTS AT THIS TIME.

 

Welsh officials plan to seek funding from the state Department of Health and Hospitals to help offset the cost of improving the town’s water supply.  The American Press reports the town council this week agreed to begin seeking $900,000 through a loan program with the DHH to replace the town’s groundwater tank with two wells.  Town officials say the state has mandated that the town replace the aging storage tank.  Town engineer Bryon Racca says plans for the project call for building a new tank off to the side, decommissioning the old tank and building a second tank where the old one was.

 

ABBEVILLE POLICE ARE SEEKING TO QUESTION THREE PEOPLE IN CONNECTION WITH AN OCTOBER 25TH HOMOCIDE.  THE BODY OF 61-YEAR-OLD ERIC STANSBURY OF VIDOR, TEXAS WAS FOUND IN HIS VEHICLE ON OAK STREET IN ABBEVILLE.  THE POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR ROBERT CROOMS JUNIOR AND KENTON CROOMS, BOTH OF ABBEVILLE, AND A FEMALE, WHO’S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.  ROBERT CROOMS JUNIOR HAS ACTIVE WARRANTS FOR NARCOTICS AND WEAPONS VIOLATIONS, AND HE IS CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

 

Louisiana residents affected by August flooding have one week left to register for disaster help with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The deadline is Monday, Nov. 14.  Residents can visit disasterassistance.gov , call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362, or visit at any FEMA disaster recovery center.  Assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants for rent, temporary housing and home repair as well as other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs.

 

The Iberia Parish sheriff says he’s relieved that a federal jury listened to his attorney and acquitted him of civil rights charges arising from the beatings of inmates by deputies.  Sheriff Louis Ackal told KLFY-TV that he was hurt that some of his former deputies testified against him. He said he had considered the deputies his friends.  Ackal was found not guilty Friday afternoon on four federal counts alleging conspiracy, deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice.

THE CROWLEY POLICE, ASSISTED BY THE ACADIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE, MADE A MAJOR DRUG BUST ON FRIDAY.  AGENTS EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT AT A HOUSE ON NORTH AVENUE E, AND FOUND ABOUT 100 PILLS THAT THEY BELIEVE ARE ECSTASY PILLS.  THE PILLS HAVE A TOTAL STREET VALUE OF BETWEEN 23 THOUSAND AND 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS.  27-YEAR-OLD CODY SCOTT WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE ACADIA PARISH JAIL ON SEVERAL DRUG CHARGES INCLUDING POSESSION WITH INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE ECSTASY AND MARIJUANA.

 

Due to the extremely dry conditions within the state, Louisiana State Fire Marshal, H. Butch Browning and Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain have ordered a prohibition against all private, outdoor burning in all but four of the state’s 64 parishes.  The order went into effect Saturday and shall remain indefinitely. Violation of the order could result in criminal or civil penalties.

Among the parishes not included in the burn ban are St. Landry and St. Mary.

Crowley Police:

There was a double shooting on Smith St. near the intersection of 11th Ave. At approximately 1:15 a.m. Chief of Police Jimmy Broussard announced that two people who apparently sitting in a car had been shot.  One of the men has died as a result of the shooting. The other victim was taken to Acadia General Hospital. The extent of his injuries were unknown at this time. “This really is a peaceful neighborhood,” said an unidentified man. 
Another man speculated that it could have been a domestic altercation. However, when police began searching an area about 15 feet on each side of the vehicle it became apparent that she shots had come from outside the vehicle.  Broussard couldn’t release anymore information but said that neighbors reported hearing multiple shots.
