POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED OVER THE WEEKEND AT A NEW IBERIA RESTAURANT.  SYLVIA MASTERS REPORTS.

DRAGO’S SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN LAFAYETTE WILL BE CLOSING ITS DOORS.  THEY WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE THEIR DINNER ONLY MENU UNTIL FEBRUARY SEVENTEENTH.  THE EMPLOYEES WILL BE OFFERED EMPLOYMENT AT DRAGO’S NEW ORLEANS AND BATON ROUGE LOCATIONS.  OWNER TOMMY CVITANOVICH SAYS THE COMBINATION OF A SLOW START, COVID, AND DRAMATIC INCREASES IN FOOD AND OPERATING COSTS WAS MORE THAN THEY COULD OVERCOME.

 

GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY WILL PUSH LOUISIANA LAWMAKERS TO EXPAND THE METHODS OF EXECUTION FOR INMATES ON DEATH ROW.  THE STATE HAS NOT HAD AN EXECUTION SINCE TWENTY-TEN AS LETHAL INJECTION DRUGS ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY.  LANDRY HAS VOICED SUPPORT FOR RESUMING EXECUTIONS USING OTHER MEANS SINCE HE HAS BEEN THE STATE’S ATTORNEY GENERAL.  A SPECIAL SESSION ADDRESSING PUBLIC SAFETY RELATED POLICIES WILL TAKE PLACE FROM FEBRUARY NINETEENTH THROUGH MARCH SIXTH.

 

FOOD TRUCKS FROM A FOOD NETWORK PROGRAM WILL BE IN LAKE CHARLES TODAY AND TOMORROW.  ON THE GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE, A GROUP OF FOOD TRUCK ENTREPRENEURS TRAVEL ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO VARIOUS CITIES, WHERE THEY FACE DIFFERENT CHALLENGES AND BUSINESS TASKS.  THE FOOD TRUCKS WILL BE BEHIND THE LAKE CHARLES EVENTS CENTER ON BORD DU LAC DRIVE FROM ELEVEN TO FIVE TODAY AND TEN TO TWO TOMORROW.  RESIDENTS ARE INVITED TO COME OUT AND VISIT THE FOOD TRUCKS.

 

A SUNSET POLICE OFFICER TELLS KLFY TV HE WAS FIRED AFTER REFUSING TO WRITE A WARRANT THAT HE CONSIDERED ILLEGAL.  FORMER OFFICER DERRICK SAVOIE SAYS POLICE CHIEF LUIS PADELLA DID NOT HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE TO SEARCH A VEHICLE THAT WAS TRESPASSING ON SOMEONE’S PROPERTY, WHERE HE FOUND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA.  SAVOIE SAYS A DAY OR TWO AFTER THE INCIDENT, HE WAS TOLD TO WRITE A WARRANT TO SEARCH THE MAN’S HOME AND VEHICLE, BUT HE REFUSED BECAUSE HE BELIEVED THE FIRST SEARCH WAS ILLEGAL.  NEWS TEN SAYS THEY ATTEMPTED TO GET A COMMENT FROM PADELLA BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED A REPLY.

 

LAFAYETTE POLICE HAVE MADE A SECOND ARREST IN A SHOOTING LAST WEDNESDAY THAT LEFT FOUR PEOPLE INJURED.  EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD RICKEY CHANEY OF LAFAYETTE HAS BEEN BOOKED INTO THE LAFAYETTE PARISH CORRECTIONAL CENTER ON TWO COUNTS OF ATTEMPTED FIRST-DEGREE MURDER.  LAFAYETTE POLICE SAY TWO SUSPECTS IN A VEHICLE FIRED SHOTS AT THREE PEOPLE ON SUNSET DRIVE.  ONE OF THE THREE WHO WERE SHOT AT BEGAN SHOOTING BACK, ACCORDING TO SERGEANT ROBIN GREEN.

 

LAST WEEK, THE LOUISIANA PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION APPROVED A STATEWIDE PROGRAM THAT AIMS TO MAKE HOMES AND BUSINESSES MORE EFFICIENT.  ITS AIM IS TO HELP REDUCE ELECTRIC BILLS.  THE COMMISSION WILL HIRE A THIRD-PARTY ADMINISTRATOR TO OVERSEE THE PROGRAM, WHICH REPLACES A MUCH SMALLER, VOLUNTARY PROGRAM OVERSEEN BY THE ELECTRIC UTILITIES.  ALSO, UTILITIES WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY CHARGE CUSTOMERS FOR POWER SALES THEY LOSE AFTER HOMES ARE MADE MORE EFFICIENT, SOMETHING UTILITIES WERE ALLOWED TO DO IN THE PAST.

 

A BICYCLIST WAS KILLED IN A HIT-AND-RUN FRIDAY NORTH OF PORT BARRE.  STATE POLICE SAY FIFTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD DANIEL CRAIG LEGER OF PORT BARRE WAS HIT FROM BEHIND ON L-A ONE-OH-THREE BY A NORTHBOUND VEHICLE THAT DID NOT STOP.  LEGER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE LATER DIED.  ANYONE WHO HAS INFORMATION IS URGED TO CALL STATE POLICE TROOP I AT TWO-SIX-TWO-FIFTY-EIGHT-EIGHTY.
