A TEENAGER HAD TO BE AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL AFTER A FIGHT NEAR OSSUN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  JOHN MOWELL OF THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS DETECTIVES RESPONDED TO THE SCENE OF A FIGHT IN PROGRESS.  UPON ARRIVING, THEY FOUND THE TEENAGER SUFFERING MULTIPLE INJURIES.  HE SAYS THEY HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED ANY SUSPECTS BUT ARE FOLLOWING UP ON LEADS AND TALKING TO WITNESSES.

 

A MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN WELSH.  POLICE RECEIVED REPORTS OF GUNFIRE JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT THAT OCCURRED IN THE 200 BLOCK OF COLEMAN STREET.  THEY FOUND A BODY ON ARRIVING BUT HAVE NOT YET RELEASED THE IDENTITY PENDING NOTIFICATION OF RELATIVES.  POLICE CHIEF MARCUS CROCHET HASN’T RELEASED MANY DETAILS YET, BUT SAYS THE CRIME SCENE STRETCHES OVER TWO OR THREE RESIDENTIAL YARDS.

Gov. John Bel Edwards is readying to unveil his worst-case scenario budget, which assumes lawmakers will refuse to replace $1 billion in expiring sales taxes and force widespread slashing across state government.  The Democrat warned the proposal would be devastating to Louisiana residents. He presents it to the Legislature’s joint budget committee today.  Public college campuses, the TOPS tuition program and safety-net health care programs are expected to face deep reductions.

 

A settlement has resolved a federal lawsuit that accused a Lafayette police officer of violating a woman’s constitutional rights by grabbing her cellphone and deleting a photo she took of her son in the officer’s vehicle.  The Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government agreed to pay $12,000 to cover the woman’s attorneys’ fees. It also agreed to train its officers on the public’s First Amendment right to photograph police performing their duties.  A judge formally dismissed the suit Friday.

 

THE MAYOR OF LAKE CHARLES SAYS HE HAS A GOAL OF GETTING MORE YOUTH INTO MENTORING PROGRAMS BY THE END OF THIS YEAR.  NIC HUNTER MET WITH THE LEADERS OF LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS IN THE LAKE AREA ON SATURDAY MORNING TO TALK ABOUT EXPANDING MENTORING PROGRAMS.  HE MENTIONED SOME NEW POSSIBLE PROGRAMS INCLUDING KID’S CAFÉ, GOVERNMENT U, AND TEEN CONNECTIONS.  HUNTER SAYS HE’D ALSO LIKE TO BRING BACK MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL AND REVIVE THE MAYOR’S YOUTH PARTNERSHIP.

 

 

The Vermilion Parish School Board president, who came under fire after a teacher was arrested following a board meeting, has resigned.  Anthony Fontana, who has served six terms on the board, announced his resignation Friday in a letter sent to the Abbeville Meridional newspaper.  Fontana says he’s thought long and hard about resigning for the past two years. He says his resignation is effective upon the Secretary of State accepting it and notifying the board that the seat is vacant.

 

A EUNICE WOMAN WAS KILLED IN AN APARTMENT FIRE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL SAYS THE 67-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WAS USING A MECHANICAL BREATHING DEVICE AND THE FIRE OCCURRED IN THAT AREA.  THE FIRE HAPPENED IN THE SWEETRIDGE APARTMENTS ON WEST MAPLE AVENUE.  THE VICTIM’S IDENTITY HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.
