SEARCH COMMITTEE CHAIR STEPHANIE ARMBRUSTER MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT TUESDAY’S LIBRARY BOARD MEETING. FORMER DIRECTOR DANNY GILLANE WAS UNEXPECTEDLY FIRED IN AUGUST DURING AN EXECUTIVE SESSION TO CONDUCT HIS ANNUAL REVIEW. GILLANE SUED THE BOARD FOR VIOLATING THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW, WHICH LED THE BOARD VOTING TO ALLOW HIM TO RESIGN SO HE COULD KEEP HIS BENEFITS.
ON TUESDAY, GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY OFFICIALLY ENDORSED DONALD TRUMP IN IS CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT. HE SAID IN A SOCIAL MEDIA POST THAT THE PEOPLE OF LOUISIANA OVERWHELMINGLY VOTED FOR TRUMP TWICE AND HE STANDS WITH THEM. LANDRY SAID TRUMP WILL SECURE THE BORDER, PROTECT COMMUNITIES AND STOP RAMPANT INFLATION. LAST YEAR, TRUMP MADE A VIDEO ENDORSING LANDRY IN HIS CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR.
TWO SOUTH LOUISIANA MEN HAVE BEEN SENTENCED AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO RECEIVING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. FIFTY-YEAR-OLD BRYAN ANTHONY FOOTE OF WESTLAKE, WHO ADMITTED TO RECEIVING EXPLICIT IMAGES OF UNDERAGE FEMALES ON THE INTERNET, WAS SENTENCED TO SEVENTEEN YEARS. A CYBER TIP LED TO THE ARREST OF THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD BRODIE CARLTON THIBODEAUX OF CHURCH POINT, WHO WAS SENTENCED TO FIFTEEN YEARS. HIS PHONE HAD MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED IMAGES AND ONE HUNDRED VIDEOS.
THE CITY OF KAPLAN HAS RECEIVED A TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE STATE TO HELP REVITALIZE THE COMMUNITY BY DEMOLISHING BLIGHTED PROPERTIES. THE CITY HAS SENT OUT FIFTY LETTERS TO OWNERS OF PROPERTIES THAT FIT THE REQUIREMENT OF A STRUCTURE FALLING APART. SO FAR THIRTY HAVE AGREED TO HAVE THEIR HOMES REMOVED FOR FREE, WHILE NINE HAVE SAID THEY WANT TO REHABILITATE THE HOME AT THEIR OWN COST. THOSE WHO HAVE THEIR HOMES DEMOLISHED WILL STILL OWN THE PROPERTY AFTER THE REMOVAL.
A FEDERAL LAWSUIT BY THE PARENTS OF A MAN, WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY LAFAYETTE POLICE IN AUGUST OF TWENTY-TWENTY, HAS BEEN DISMISSED. TRAYFORD PELLERIN ALLEGEDLY BRANDISHED A KNIFE AS HE WENT TO A CONVENIENCE STORE, IGNORING THE COMMANDS OF OFFICERS TO STOP. WHEN HE GOT TO THE DOOR, HE WAS SHOT BY OFFICERS APPROXIMATELY TEN TIMES. THE LAWSUIT BY PELLERIN’S PARENTS SAID HE DID NOT BRANDISH A KNIFE AT ANYONE, BUT DISTRICT ATTORNEY DON LANDRY SAYS EVIDENCE PRESENTED AT A GRAND JURY INQUIRY SHOWED HE NOT ONLY HELD A KNIFE, BUT HE THREATENED TO STAB AN OFFICER A FEW FEET FROM HIM.
LOUISIANA IS ONE OF FIFTEEN STATES THAT HAVE NOT OPTED IN TO A NEW SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP FEED STUDENTS WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT. ADVOCATES AND AGENCY OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS STILL AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY’S ADMINISTRATION TO SIGN ONTO THE FEDERAL PROGRAM. IT WOULD GIVE UP TO ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DOLLARS TO FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WHO QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED LUNCHES, WHICH CAN BE SPENT ON GROCERIES. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES SAYS THE DELAY IN ACCEPTING FEDERAL FUNDS WAS DUE TO THE CHANGOVER IN ADMINISTRATIONS. GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY’S COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, KATE KELLY, SAYS THE DEADLINE PASSED DURING JOHN BEL EDWARD’S ADMINISTRATION.
A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE WAS ARRESTED TUESDAY BY CHURCH POINT POLICE FOR SEVERAL VEHICLE BURGLARIES. AN INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE JUVENILE ALLEGEDLY BURGLARIZED FIVE VEHICLES BETWEEN MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY MORNING. HE’S ALSO SUSPECTED OF PRIOR VEHICLE BURGLARIES WHICH ARE STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. THE JUVENILE HAS A LENGTHY CRIMINAL RECORD AND IS ON PROBATION BUT WAS RELEASED TO HIS GUARDIAN AS REQUIRED BY LAW.
