A Lake Charles attorney has been nominated for a federal judgeship.  Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy said Monday that James D. Cain Jr. was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as a U.S. district judge for the Western District of Louisiana in Lake Charles.  Cain is a Deridder native and the son of former state Sen. James David Cain.  Cain’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

 

THE FAMILY OF A TEENAGER, WHO CLAIMED HE WAS SEXUALLY ASSAULTED BY A ST. LANDRY PARISH PRIEST, FILED A CIVIL LAWSUIT FRIDAY, SEEKING UNSPECIFIED DAMAGES.  FATHER MICHAEL GUIDRY OF ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH IN MORROW SURRENDERED TO THE ST. LANDRY PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE IN JUNE AND CONFESSED TO HAVING MOLESTED THE MALE VICTIM IN 2015, WHO WAS A 16-YEAR-OLD ALTER BOY AT THE TIME.  THE FAMILY ALLEGES IN THE LAWSUIT THAT GUIDRY PUSHED ALCOHOL ON THE BOY, WHO DEVELOPED A DRINKING PROBLEM.  THE FAMILY ALSO CLAIMS THAT THE DIOCESE OF LAFAYETTE THREATENED TO DISCONTINUE COUNSELING PAYMENTS IF THE FAMILY FILED THE LAWSUIT.

 

Louisiana’s lieutenant governor and agriculture commissioner are traveling to Iowa to trade agri-tourism ideas with other states’ officials.  Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, Louisiana’s top tourism official, announced Monday that he and Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain were in Des Moines.  Nungesser is trying to find more agreements like Louisiana has with Luckett Farms, which allows farmers to operate at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site. They can create corn mazes, host pick-it-yourself strawberries and have vegetable stands, among other activities.

 

THREE MEMBERS OF THE SMILE COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY BOARD HAVE BEEN VOTED OUT.  JOHN BILLIOT AND WALLACE OZENNE WERE ACCUSED OF EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM WHILE AFRICA ARCENEAUX WAS ALLEGEDLY DISRUPTIVE.  ARCENEAUX TOLD KLFY TV THAT SHE REFUSED TO BE COMPLICIT WITH THE BOARD’S SCHEMES THROUGHOUT THE GOVERNMENT AND BREAK THE LAW.  SHE SAYS SHE PLANS TO PETITION THE COURTS FOR UNLAWFUL REMOVAL.

 

 

A SEARCH FOR AN INDIANA MAN IN DERIDDER YESTERDAY LED AUTHORITIES TO PUT FOUR SCHOOLS IN THE CITY ON A PRECAUTIONARY LOCKDOWN.  JACOB MADEN HAD COME TO DERIDDER A FEW WEEKS AGO TO ESCAPE A ROBBERY CHARGE IN INDIANA.  MADEN LATER TURNED HIMSELF INTO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND HE’LL BE EXTRADITED BACK TO INDIANA IN A FEW WEEKS.  HE FACES A CHARGE OF BATTERY IN DERIDDER FOR ALLEGEDLY PUNCHING A FAMILY MEMBER.

 

L-A 91, ALSO KNOWN AS THE ESTERWOOD HIGHWAY, HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN BETWEEN I-TEN AND HIGHWAY 90.  A WATER LINE BREAK CAUSED A SINKHOLE TO DEVELOP NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF L-A 91 AND HIGHWAY 90 IN ESTHERWOOD.  THE ROAD WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL CREWS CAN MAKE EMERGENCY REPAIRS.

 

Louisiana public buildings will fly their American and state flags at half-staff to honor U.S. Sen. John McCain.  Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Monday he’s ordered the lowering of the flags for seven days, until McCain is buried on Sunday.
