A SEX OFFENDER HAS BEEN ARRESTED FOR LIVING TOO CLOSE TO A SCHOOL IN DUSON.  BRYAN SCULLY IS HOMELESS, BUT AUTHORITIES LEARNED HE HAD BEEN LIVING AT A HOME THAT WAS WITHIN 200 FEET OF AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND DAY CARE.  DUSON POLICE INTERVIEWED THE HOMEOWNER AND FOUND THAT SCULLY HAD BEEN LIVING THERE FOR TWO WEEKS.  SCULLY WAS CHARGED WITH UNLAWFUL PRESENCE OF A SEX OFFENDER AND FAILURE TO REPORT A NEW ADDRESS, WHICH ARE PAROLE VIOLATIONS.

 

THE KROGER STORE ON TWELFTH STREET IN LAKE CHARLES HAS CLOSED AFTER A SURPRISE HEALTH INSPECTION REVEALED A RODENT PROBLEM, ACCORDING TO KPLC TV.  A STATE REPORT REVEALED THREE CRITICAL PROBLEMS, ALL DEALING WITH RODENTS.  KROGER OFFICIALS SAY THE CLOSURE IS VOLUNTARY AND COINCIDES WITH A PLANNED REMODELING.  A LAKE CHARLES CITY SPOKESMAN SAYS KROGER HAS SUBMITTED BUILDING PLANS FOR THE STORE AND ONCE A REVIEW OF THE PLANS ARE APPROVED, A CONSTRUCTION PERMIT WILL BE ISSUED.

Louisiana’s attorney general says the state Medicaid program could get a refund of $172 million paid under the federal health overhaul, if a court ruling in Texas stands.  Attorney General Jeff Landry touted the federal court decision Wednesday, but acknowledged it could be appealed.  Six states are involved in the lawsuit. Their Medicaid programs reimbursed managed-care organizations that coordinate services for Medicaid patients for a fee charged under the federal Affordable Care Act.

 

Residents are defending a Lafayette public library’s plan to host fraternity brothers who will read to young children while dressed as drag queens.  The Advertiser reports that all but one of the 20-plus citizens who spoke at Tuesday’s Lafayette City-Parish Council meeting said they support the Oct. 6 event that’s being planned by a fraternity group at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  Supporters say it will promote inclusion and openness, while opponents say it’s inappropriate for young children.  The library system’s director, Teresa Elberson, says she has no plans to cancel it unless the library governing board instructs otherwise.

 

A MAN WANTED FOR TWO OUT-OF-STATE HOMOCIDES WAS ARRESTED WEDNESDAY IN LAKE CHARLES.  49-YEAR-OLD DARREL BURNSIDE, WHO WAS LIVING IN LAKE CHARLES, WAS WANTED IN HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS FOR THE MURDER OF HIS GIRLFRIEND, ASHLEY GEORGE, IN APRIL.  BURNSIDE AND GEORGE ARE ALSO SUSPECTS IN THE MURDER OF BURNSIDE’S WIFE, CAROL BURNSIDE, IN MISSISSIPPI LAST JANUARY.  YESTERDAY, STATE POLICE AND HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATORS EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT ON BURNSIDE’S VEHICLE AND HOME IN CALCASIEU PARISH.

 

A DOMESTIC DISPUTE IN FRANKLIN LED TO A SHOOTING THAT LEFT TWO PEOPLE INJURED.  POLICE WERE CALLED AFTER A MAN AND WOMAN WENT TO A HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT.  THE WOMAN IS IN STABLE CONDITION WHILE THE MAN’S WOUND WAS NOT LIFE THREATENING.  THE SHOOTING HAPPENED IN THE 600 BLOCK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING BOULEVARD.

 

Gov. John Bel Edwards is ordering flags to be flown at half-staff at the Louisiana Capitol and all public buildings around the state, in honor of a former state lawmaker who died last week.  The Democratic governor’s executive order, announced Thursday, directs the flags to be lowered today until sunset, as funeral services for former Rep. Charlie Lancaster are held.  Lancaster, a Jefferson Parish Republican, died at the age of 74 after a heart attack. He had represented the New Orleans suburb of Metairie in the House of Representatives for 32 years and helped to build the modern Republican Party in Louisiana.
