A BUSINESS IN NEW IBERIA LOST ITS ROOF YESTERDAY AFTERNOON DURING A STORM. THE WIND BLEW THE ROOF OFF THE BUSINESS LOCATED IN THE ONE HUNDRED BLOCK OF MAIN STREET AND STRUCK TWO VEHICLES BEFORE LANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THE BUILDING WAS BEING RENOVATED INTO A NINE ROOM HOTEL IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN NEW IBERIA. NO ONE WAS HURT.
A STUDENT AT NORTH VERMILLION HIGH SCHOOL WAS ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY BRINGING A GUN ON CAMPUS. ADMINSTRATORS RECEIVED A VIDEO TIP. SUPERINTENDENT TOMMY BYLER SAYS, AFTER REVIEWING THE SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEO, THE STUDENT WAS IDENTIFIED AND ARRESTED AND HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED TO THE STUDENT’S PARENTS. BYLER SAYS THEY SEARCHED THE CAMPUS BUT DID NOT FIND ANY WEAPONS.
THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IS HOLDING A BACK-TO-SCHOOL COMMUNITY FAIR IN LAKE CHARLES TOMORROW. IT TAKES PLACE AT THE SAINT MARY MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH FROM TEN TO NOON. BACKPACKS WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES WILL BE GIVEN AWAY PLUS THERE WILL BE FREE FOOD AND FREE BOY’S HAIRCUTS. THE CITY OF LAKE CHARLES, WHICH IS A CO-SPONSOR OF THE EVENT, IS PROVIDING A FUN JUMP.
CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN WEDNESDAY ON A MAJOR ROUNDABOUT AT THE INTERSECTION OF DULLES AND RUE DEBELIER IN SCOTT. MAYOR JAN SCOTT RICHARD SAYS IT WILL BE THE LARGEST ROUNDABOUT IN THE CITY AND COME WITH MAJOR TRAFFIC DELAYS AND DETOURS. HE SAYS PEOPLE HEADING WEST ON DULLES WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO PAST RUE DE BELIER. A DETOUR ROAD WILL ALLOW TRAFFIC TO GET TO AND FROM ACADIANA HIGH SCHOOL.
CONSTRUCTION ON A ROUNDABOUT AT SAVOY ROAD AND CHEMIN METAIRIE, NEAR THE YOUNGSVILLE SPORTS COMPLEX, IS COMPLETED. CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN TWENTY-TWENTY AND THE ROUNDABOUT PROJECT COST NEARLY THREE MILLION DOLLARS. MAYOR KEN RITTER SAYS NEARLY FIFTY THOUSAND VEHICLES TRAVEL THROUGH THAT AREA DAILY. THE ROUNDABOUT IS DESIGNED TO MAKE TRAVEL ON THAT ROADWAY SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT.

THE STATE SUPREME COURT DENIED AN APPEAL BY THE VILLE PLATTE POLICE CHIEF, WHO WAS SEEKING TO RUN FOR REELECTION. THE THIRD CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEAL HAD BARRED NEAL LARTIGUE FROM RUNNING AGAIN BECAUSE IT WAS DETERMINED HE LIVES OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS. HE APPEALED TO THE STATE SUPREME COURT, WHO UPHELD THE APPEAL’S COURT RULING YESTERDAY MORNING. THAT MEANS AL PERRY THOMAS WILL BE THE NEXT POLICE CHIEF FOR VILLE PLATTE, SINCE HE WAS THE ONLY OTHER CANDIDATE ON THE BALLOT.
ACADIA PARISH SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT RICHARD SAYS THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YESTERDAY WENT SMOOTHLY. HE SAYS THEY DO HAVE A SHORTAGE OF BUS DRIVERS, BUT THEY HAD CONTINGENCY PLANS IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE ALL ROUTES WERE COVERED. HE TELLS KLFY TV THEY HAVE GOOD COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE SCHOOLS TO ENSURE STUDENTS ARE SAFE. HE SAYS THEY HAVE A NUMBER OF WAYS TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS ON THE SCHOOL LEVEL AND DISTRICT LEVEL.
