A CROWLEY WOMAN WAS KILLED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION ON L-A THIRTEEN YESTERDAY MORNING. STATE POLICE TROOP I SPOKESPERSON THOMAS GOSSEN SAYS FORTY-YEAR-OLD LATASHI EDDY WAS TRAVELING NORTH AT AROUND FOUR THIRTY WHEN SHE CROSSED THE CENTER LINE FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON AND HIT A SOUTHBOUND PICKUP TRUCK. EDDY, WHO WASN’T WEARING A SEAT BELT, WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE WHILE THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES. THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

LAST NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE CITY AND PARISH COUNCILS HELD A JOINT MEETING TO DISCUSS THE BUDGET FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR. IT WAS THE FIRST COUNCIL MEETINGS ATTENDED BY MAYOR PRESIDENT JOSH GUILLORY SINCE HE WAS IN REHAB FOR ALCOHOL ABUSE AND P-T-S-D. HE THANKED THE COUNCIL MEMBERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND PRAYERS. COUNCIL MEMBER ANDY NAQUIN TELLS KLFY TV HE IS PROUD OF GUILLORY FOR GETTING THE HELP AND TREATMENT HE NEEDED.
NEW IBERIA POLICE HAD TO DEAL WITH A HOSTAGE SITUATION YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT A HOME ON MAGNOLIA STREET. SERGEANT DAESHA HUGHES SAYS POLICE LEARNED UPON ARRIVAL THAT TWO WOMEN WERE BEING HELD AGAINST THEIR WILL IN THE HOME BY AN ARMED MAN. NEGOTIATERS WERE ABLE TO TALK THE MAN INTO SURRENDERING ABOUT AN HOUR LATER AND HE WAS ARRESTED AFTER WALKING OUT OF THE HOME. THE WOMEN WERE UNHARMED.
IT’S BEEN NEARLY TWO YEARS SINCE TWO HURRICANES HIT CALCASIEU PARISH AND EVERY SCHOOL FACILITY SUFFERED SOME LEVEL OF DAMAGE, TOTALING AT LEAST FOUR HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS. THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY SIGNIFICANT REIMBURSEMENTS FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR PERMANENT PROJECTS, WHICH GOES BEYOND THE CLEANUP FROM THE STORMS, ACCORDING TO THE ADVOCATE. SO FAR, THE DISTRICT HAS SPENT 320 MILLION DOLLARS FOR REMEDIATION AND REPAIRS. THE DISTRICT WAS ONLY INSURED FOR UP TO FORTY THOUSAND MAXIMUM.
CARGILL, AN INTERNATIONAL FOOD SUPPLIER, ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL BE INVESTING THIRTY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS IN THEIR FACILITY NEAR BREAUX BRIDGE, WHICH THEY’VE OPERATED SINCE NINETEEN SEVENTY-ONE. THE MONEY WILL BE USED TO MAKE UPGRADES TO OLDER MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT TO ALLOW THE PLANT TO OPERATE MORE SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY. IT WILL ALSO ENABLE THEM TO RETAIN SEVENTY JOBS. PRESIDENT SONYA ROBERTS SAYS CARGILL IS COMMITTED TO THE BREAUX BRIDGE COMMUNITY AND LOOKS FORWARD TO PARTNERING WITH LOUISIANA AND SAINT MARTIN PARISH.
