TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN A SHOOTING EARLY SUNDAY MORNING IN THE 22-HUNDRED BLOCK OF NORTHEAST EVANGELINE THRUWAY IN LAFAYETTE.  JEFF HORCHAK HAS MORE.

THERE WAS A SHOOTING OVERNIGHT ON VERDINE STREET IN SULPHUR.  THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF DETAILS THAT HAVE BEEN RELEASED YET.  MEL ESTESS OF THE SULPHUR POLICE DEPARTMENT TELLS KPLC TV THAT ONE PERSON WAS SHOT, BUT THEIR CONDITION IS NOT YET KNOWN.  THERE IS A SUSPECT WHO IS BEING QUESTIONED.

 

Tuesday will mark the third year for a full-dress religious procession called the Fete-Dieu du Teche, which celebrates the eucharist. But this year’s procession will make the second time the procession has floated down a Louisiana bayou.  Last year’s floods made the bayou too dangerous, so the procession went by road.

Weather permitting, the 50-boat procession will stop at a half-dozen churches on a 35-mile span along Bayou Teche from Leonville to St. Martinville.

 

The glitzy 90th birthday party for Louisiana’s four-term former governor Edwin Edwards drew a packed house, including the state’s current chief executive and other elected officials from around the state.  Edwards said he was surprised and grateful by the turnout for Saturday night’s celebratory bash. He called it “one of the highlights of my long career.”  Edwards, a Democrat, was Louisiana’s most powerful political figure for decades, serving as governor for 16 years between 1972 and 1996. He’s known for his biting wit, political savvy and, later, a federal prison sentence after a corruption conviction.

 

Authorities have captured a Lafayette businessman who may have orchestrated the kidnapping of his estranged wife.  Slidell Police spokesman Det. Daniel Seuzeneau says police and U.S. Marshals arrested 49-year-old Lawrence Michael Handley at a motel in that city Friday afternoon.  Handley’s wife was kidnapped from her Lafayette home a week ago by two men. She was found alive in the back of a van that two Jackson, Mississippi men abandoned Sunday in Port Allen after a police chase. The men ran into a swamp and were found drowned Monday in the nearby Intracoastal Waterway.

 

LAKE CHARLES POLICE ARE EXPECTED TO RELEASE MORE INFORMATION TODAY ON A HOMOCIDE, WHICH HAPPENED YESTERDAY.  POLICE WERE CALLED OUT SUNDAY MORNING AT TEN TO 113 EAST GREENWAY STREET.  DEPUTY CHIEF MARK KRAUS SAYS ONE PERSON IS CONFIRMED DEAD.  INFORMATION ON THE IDENTITY OF THE VICTIM AND ANY SUSPECTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED TODAY.

 

A BAR IN RAYNE CAUGHT FIRE SATURDAY WHILE PATRONS WERE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT.  RAYNE FIREFIGHTERS PUT OUT THE FIRE AT CHAPS, FORMERLY KNOWN AS ROOSTERS, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE ONE THOUSAND BLOCK OF QUARTER POLE ROAD.  MAYOR CHUCK ROBICHAUX TELLS KATC TV THAT HE BELIEVES THE FIRE WAS STARTED BY AN ELECTRICAL SHORT IN THE BREAKER PANEL.  HE SAYS THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

 

Children’s book author and musician Johnette Downing is receiving the 18th Louisiana Writer Award for her contributions to the state’s literary and cultural life.

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser’s office announced the award recipient, describing Downing as having a “special gift for making Louisiana’s unique culture come alive for children around the world.”  Downing will receive the award on Oct. 28 during the opening ceremony of the Louisiana Book Festival at the state capitol. In a statement, Downing said she is “humbled” to be included among past recipients who include Ernest Gaines, Darrell Bourque, Christine Wiltz, Tom Piazza and fellow children’s book author William Joyce.
