A LAFAYETTE WOMAN FACES SECOND DEGREE MURDER CHARGES IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF A MAN FOUND SUNDAY MORNING INSIDE A HOTEL ROOM.  JEFF HORCHAK REPORTS.

A LAKE AREA MOTORCYCLE CLUB IS HOSTING THEIR SEVENTH ANNUAL CAMP FOR A CAUSE, A DONATION DRIVE THIS SATURDAY FOR THE OASIS WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S SHELTER.  THE WELL CONNECTED RIDERZ WILL BE AT THE KMART PARKING LOT ON RYAN STREET IN LAKE CHARLES THIS SATURDAY FROM NOON TO MIDNIGHT.  THEY WILL COLLECT TOYS, CLOTHES, AND CANNED GOODS.  OASIS IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR THE SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE.

 

A PEDESTRIAN WAS KILLED BY A HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER IN ST. MARTIN PARISH SUNDAY MORNING.  THE PEDESTRIAN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 51-YEAR-OLD DORINE JOHNNIE, WHO WAS STRUCK WHILE WALKING IN THE CADE AREA ON

L-A 92-1.  LATER, 34-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL JOHN OF BREAUX BRIDGE CALLED STATE POLICE AND CONFESSED THAT HE WAS THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE INVOLVED IN THE HIT-AND-RUN, A HUMMER H-2.  HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE ST. MARTIN PARISH JAIL ON A CHARGE OF FELONY HIT AND RUN.

 

Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco says she is undergoing treatment for cancer in her liver.  In a letter released to media outlets Sunday, the Democratic one-term governor says she’s in the “fight for my own life, one that will be difficult to win.”

Blanco says there is no known cure for the type of melanoma in her liver, so “a variety of treatments” likely will be needed. She asked for prayers.

 

The Justice Department says IberiaBank has agreed to pay $11.7 million in a settlement with federal officials over allegations the bank and its mortgage company made false claims for loan guarantees.  The agreement with the Lafayette-based banking company was announced Friday.  The Justice Department says that IberiaBank acknowledged that between 2005 and 2014 it certified Federal Housing Administration mortgage loans that didn’t meet federal requirements and shouldn’t have been eligible for FHA mortgage insurance. During the same time, federal officials say the company didn’t self-report violations of federal requirements or perform required quality reviews in a timely manner.

 

A TEXAS MAN WAS STRUCK BY A PICKUP TRUCK YESTERDAY WHILE WALKING ALONG L-A 12 NEAR STARKS.  LOUISIANA STATE POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE AT AROUND 2:30 YESTERDAY MORNING WHERE 60-YEAR-OLD SAUL ZAMPARIPPA RAMIREZ OF ENNIS, TEXAS WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD BY THE CALCASIEU PARISH CORONER.  THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP TRUCK WAS UNINJURIED AND PASSED A BREATHALYZER TEST.  A TOXICOLOGY SAMPLE WAS TAKEN FROM RAMIREZ TO DETERMINE IF HE WAS IMPAIRED.

 

A NEW IBERIA FAMILY’S HOME WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE SATURDAY MORNING, THOUGH THE PARENTS, THEIR THREE KIDS AND THE FAMILY PETS MADE IT OUT SAFELY.  AN IBERIA PARISH FIREFIGHTER TELLS KATC TV THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE MASTER BEDROOM AND APPEARED TO COME FROM A LAMP THAT WAS PLUGGED IN.  THE HOUSE WAS LOCATED IN THE 39-HUNDRED BLOCK OF JACK BROOKS ROAD.  DONATIONS TO HELP THE FAMILY, INCLUDING CLOTHES, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS AND FURNITURE, CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE IBERIA ANIMAL CLINIC ON CENTER STREET IN NEW IBERIA.

 

Louisiana residents displaced by the August 2016 flooding and living in mobile homes provided by the federal government can stay in them until May.  But they’ll have to start paying rent in March for the manufactured housing units.  Louisiana’s homeland security office says the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to the state’s request to extend the temporary housing program — but refused to continue waiving rent for the mobile homes.  The state intends to appeal the decision.
