THERE WERE AN ADDITIONAL TWENTY-SIX DEATHS IN TODAY’S REPORT FROM THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.  THE TOTAL IS NOW AT THIRTY-SEVEN HUNDRED.  THERE ARE JUST OVER A THOUSAND MORE POSITIVE CORONAVIRUS CASES TODAY PUTTING THE OVERALL TOTAL ABOVE ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN THOUSAND.  HOSPITALIZATIONS ARE DOWN BY SEVENTEEN WHILE THOSE ON VENTILATORS ROSE BY SIX.

 

ACADIANA HAD FIVE ADDITIONAL DEATHS REPORTED TODAY.  THAT INCLUDES TWO IN ACADIA PARISH AND ONE EACH IN LAFAYETTE, ST. MARTIN AND VERMILLION PARISHES.  THE TOTAL IS AT THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-SEVEN.  THERE WERE NEARLY TWO HUNDRED MORE CASES FOR THE REGION.  THE TOTAL IS SIXTEEN THOUSAND, SIX HUNDRED ELEVEN.

 

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA ADDED MORE THAN A HUNDRED NEW COVID-NINETEEN CASES, INCLUDING EIGHTY-THREE IN CALCASIEU PARISH.  ALLEN PARISH’S TOTAL NUMBER HAS SURPASSED ONE THOUSAND FOR THE FIRST TIME.  THE TOTAL FOR THE REGION IS EIGHT THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED FORTY-TWO.  THERE ARE TWO MORE DEATHS INCLUDING ONE EACH IN ALLEN AND JEFF DAVIS PARISHES.  THE TOTAL IS ONE HUNDRED SIXTY.

Louisiana small businesses that have been hammered by the coronavirus outbreak and haven’t received federal aid can start applying today for grants up to $15,000 to cover pandemic-related expenses. State lawmakers created the $275 million, federally financed Main Street Recovery Program. The dollars are expected to run out quickly. More than 450,000 businesses are estimated to be eligible, but fewer than 20,000 would be able to collect payments if they each receive the maximum grant.

 

Education software company SchoolMint Inc. will move its headquarters from San Francisco to Louisiana as it consolidates its U.S. operations in Lafayette. The company’s CEO and Gov. John Bel Edwards made the announcement yesterday. The software firm also will relocate corporate offices from New York and Miami to Lafayette as part of the consolidation plans. The governor’s office says the restructuring will create 178 new jobs with SchoolMint in Lafayette, with an average annual salary of more than $74,000 plus benefits.

 

A  COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY FOR SPRING AND SUMMER GRADUATES OF SOWELA TECHNICAL COLLEGE IN LAKE CHARLES THAT WAS SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST SIXTH, HAS BEEN POSTPONED.  THOSE GRADUATES HAVE BEEN INVITED TO HAVE THE GRADUATION DURING THE FALL COMMENCEMENT WHICH IS PLANNED FOR DECEMBER EIGHTEENTH.  A MAY NINETEENTH SPRING GRADUATION WAS ORIGINALLY POSTPONED TO AUGUST WHEN IT WAS HOPED THAT THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC WOULD BE MORE UNDER CONTROL.  CHANCELLOR DOCTOR NEIL ASPENWALL SAYS THEY FEEL IT’S IMPORTANT FOR GRADUATES TO BE RECOGNIZED IN FRONT OF THEIR FAMILIES AND PEERS FOR THEIR EDUCATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND THEY ARE HOPING THE DECEMBER COMMENCEMENT WILL ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN.

 

A CROWLEY MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS ACCUSED OF HAVING RELATIONS WITH AN UNDERAGE FEMALE.  THE ALLEGATION WAS MADE TO THE CROWLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT’S PATROL DIVISION ON WEDNESDAY AND, AFTER AN INVESTIGATION, TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD MELVIN EMILE DUGAR WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE ACADIA PARISH JAIL.  POLICE CHIEF JIMMY BROUSSARD SAYS THAT AFTER THE ARREST, THEY DETERMINED THERE WAS AN ADDITIONAL VICTIM.  BOND FOR DUGAR WAS SET AT ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

 

Officials in several states said residents have reported receiving unsolicited packages of seeds in the mail that appear to be sent from China and are urging the public not to plant them.  The agriculture departments in LouisianaWashingtonKansas and Virginia have recently issued statements warning residents that the seeds may be invasive or otherwise harmful to local plants or livestock. People in UtahArizona and Ohio have also reported receiving the mysterious packages.

Some of the packages were labeled as jewelry and may have Chinese writing on them, according to agriculture officials.
