A SHOOTING DEATH SUNDAY MORNING IN LAFAYETTE HAS BEEN RULED A JUSTIFIABLE HOMOCIDE.  42-YEAR-OLD ALEXANDER STOKES WAS FOUND DEAD AT THE SCENE WHEN POLICE ARRIVED AT NINE A-M.  POLICE SAY STOKES HAD ATTACKED THE SHOOTER WITH A KNIFE AND THE SHOOTER FIRED HIS WEAPON TO PROTECT HIS LIFE.  STOKES WAS THE BOYFRIEND OF THE SHOOTER’S MOTHER AND THEY ALL LIVED AT THE SAME RESIDENCE.

 

Several groups are getting together to expand a popular fishing spot created five years ago in a southwest Louisiana lake.  Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana says they and other groups will be adding 2,000 tons of limestone or crushed concrete next to the Brad Vincent reef in the middle of Calcasieu Lake.

That will expand the 6-acre reef to 9 or 10 acres.  The work starting Tuesday will be the association’s fourth reef project in Calcasieu Lake and its 23rd statewide.

 

STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CROWLEY SUNDAY MORNING.  POLICE CHIEF JIMMY BROUSSARD SAYS THREE OFFICERS WORKING SECURITY RESPONDED TO SHOTS FIRED AND FOUND A 24-YEAR-OLD MAN, WHO LATER DIED FROM HIS INJURIES.  BROUSSARD SAYS THE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING HAPPENED AFTER THAT AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST SECOND STREET AND NORTH AVENUE B.  ONE PERSON SHOT BY THE OFFICER IS IN THE HOSPITAL AND NO POLICE WERE INJURED.

 

A lawmaker in the running for Louisiana’s secretary of state post says she’s cancer free after her latest procedure.  State Rep. Julie Stokes tweeted Friday about a call from her doctor confirming lab results showing no signs of the disease.  WBRZ-TV reports Stokes was diagnosed with breast cancer last July. She was forced to drop out of the race for state treasurer because of the illness.

 

THE BROTHER OF A MAN, WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED AT THE HOLY FAMILY APARTMENTS IN LAFAYETTE, HAS BEEN ARRESTED.  23-YEAR-OLD JAVONTA CLAY OF LAFAYETTE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE WHEN POLICE ARRIVED AFTER SIX P-M ON JULY FIFTH.  28-YEAR-OLD LEONTA CLAY WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY AND CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER.  HE IS BEING HELD IN THE LAFAYETTE PARISH CORRECTIONAL CENTER WITH NO BOND.

 

The City of Lake Charles is seeking volunteers for a free health clinic planned for the fall.  The American Press reports Operation Healing & Restoration, planned for Sept. 15-16 in the Civic Center, needs both medical and non-medical volunteers for the event to be successful. Coordinator Emily Ashworth says they need dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, doctors and support staff.  The clinic will provide free dental, vision and general medical care to every person who shows up — as long as there are enough volunteers.

 

AN ARREST HAS BEEN MADE IN CONNECTION TO A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED IN OPELOUSAS.  JEFF HORCHAK REPORTS.

THERE ARE NEARLY TWO THOUSAND NEW ORPHAN OIL AND GAS WELLS THAT HAVE BEEN LEFT UNPLUGGED IN LOUISIANA, ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM THE ADVOCATE.  THAT’S UP FROM 788 FIVE YEARS AGO BEFORE THE OIL PRICE COLLAPSE.  PATRICK COURREGES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES SAYS THERE WERE A LOT OF GOOD OPERATORS WHO TRIED TO WORK WITHIN THE RULES BUT WHO WENT BROKE.  WILMA SUBRA OF THE LOUISIANA ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION NETWORK SAYS THEY KNOW OF SOME WELLS THAT ARE CAUSING SEVERE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS BUT THERE AREN’T ENOUGH RESOURCES TO DEAL WITH IT.
