A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL WILL BE HELD THURSDAY AFTERNOON AT ONE P-M AT OUR LADY OF WISDOM CHURCH. VISITATION WILL BE AT THE DELHOMME CHAPEL OF FLOWERS ON WEDNESDAY FROM FOUR TO EIGHT P-M AND AGAIN ON THURSDAY FROM EIGHT A-M TO TWELVE-FIFTEEN P-M.
A federal appeals court has lifted its hold on Louisiana’s congressional redistricting. The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal means a special session may start Wednesday for a remap ordered by a district judge. Gov. John Bel Edwards calls it a big step in the right direction for the people of Louisiana. The 5th Circuit also called on Sunday for a full appeal of Judge Shelly Dick’s opinion to be heard during the week of July 4.
EACH MEMBER OF THE LOUISIANA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION HAS SIGNED A LETTER URGING THE BUREAU OF PRISONS TO ADDRESS STAFFING SHORTAGES AT THE OAKDALE FEDERAL CORRECTION COMPLEX. ACCORDING TO THE LETTER, STAFFING LEVELS AT TWO LOW-SECURITY FACILITIES IS NEARING CRISIS. THERE ARE ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN STAFF VACANCIES INCLUDING SIXTY-FIVE VACANCIES FOR CORRECTIONAL SERVICE STAFF. BECAUSE OF THAT, EMPLOYEES ARE WORKING MANDATORY OVERTIME WHICH IS LEADING TO EXHAUSTION AND BURN-OUT WITH SOME ACTIVELY SEEKING TO TRANSFER OR RETIRE.
A REVISED PARISH-WIDE ORDINANCE REGULATING GROUP HOMES IN SAINT LANDRY PARISH IS NOW IN PLACE FOR THE UNINCORPORATED AREAS. PARISH PRESIDENT JESSIE BELLARD SAYS, UNTIL NOW, ONLY AN OCCUPATIONAL LICENSE WAS NEEDED TO OPERATE A GROUP HOME AND THEY WERE POPPING UP EVERYWHERE IN THE PARISH. THE ORDINANCE MONITORS THE COMPLETE OPERATION OF THE HOME AND PROVIDES TIGHTER RESTRICTIONS IN REGULATING WHAT SERVICES OR CARE THE HOME PROVIDES. BELLARD TELLS KLFY TV THAT THE HOMES WILL HAVE TO COMPLY OR THEY WILL BE SHUT DOWN.
THE DUSON POLICE DEPARTMENT IS BACK TO FULLY STAFFED. BETWEEN JUNE SECOND AND NINTH, HALF OF THE DEPARTMENT’S STAFF CAME DOWN WITH COVID-NINETEEN AND POLICE CHIEF KIP JUDICE WAS INFECTED AS WELL. AS A RESULT, THE OFFICES WERE CLOSED ON MONDAY TO FRIDAY LAST WEEK BECAUSE OF A LACK OF STAFF AND TO CLEAN AND SANITIZE THEM. THE ACADIA AND LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICES AND STATE POLICE WERE ON STANDBY TO HELP OUT IN ANY EMERGENCIES.
STATE OFFICES IN LOUISIANA WILL BE CLOSED THIS FRIDAY IN OBSERVANCE OF JUNETEENTH. LAST YEAR LEGISLATION WAS PASSED AND SIGNED INTO LAW MAKING JUNETEENTH EACH YEAR A LEGAL HOLIDAY. JUNETEENTH HONORS THE DAY IN NINETEEN SIXTY-FIVE WHEN ENSLAVED AMERICANS LEARNED THEY WERE FREE. THE GOVERNOR SIGNED THE LEGISLATION THAT DESIGNATED THE THIRD SATURDAY IN JUNE AS JUNETEENTH DAY AND, EACH YEAR, ALL STATE OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED THE FRIDAY BEFORE THAT SATURDAY.
MAC’S SUGAR CITY MARKET IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE FOLLOWING A FIRE YESTERDAY THAT CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE HAS BEEN ASKED TO HELP INVESTIGATE THE ORIGIN AND CAUSE OF THE FIRE. IBERIA PARISH DEPUTIES HAVE DETERMINED THE FIRE LIKELY STARTED IN THE MEAT PROCESSING ROOM, WHICH IS IN A WAREHOUSE ATTACHED TO THE STORE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED BUT IT IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE SUSPICIOUS.
