TWO PEOPLE WERE SHOT IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE OVER THE WEEKEND.  SYLVIA MASTERS REPORTS.

A TOTAL OF THREE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTING DEATHS OF FOUR-YEAR-OLD RAKATELYN COLLA AND FORTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD ALTON JAMES THOMAS AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN OPELOUSAS.  THE FAMILY OF THOMAS HELD A BALLOON RELEASE FOR HIM FRIDAY EVENING.  THEY TELL KLFY TV THEY ARE HOPEFUL HE WILL GET JUSTICE.  ALTON’S COUSIN, TIFFANY THOMAS, SAYS THERE’S TOO MUCH VIOLENCE AND SHE WANTS THE HATRED TO STOP.

 

AN ELTON WOMAN WAS KILLED LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AFTER BEING STRUCK BY TWO VEHICLES ON SOUTH FRONTAGE ROAD WEST OF IOWA.  STATE TROOPERS FOUND IN A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION THAT THIRTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD TONYA MORGAN YOUNG WAS WEARING DARK-COLORED CLOTHING AND WAS IN THE WESTBOUND LANE WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY THE DRIVER OF A TWENTY-FOURTEEN BUICK VERANO TRAVELING WEST.  SHE WAS THEN HIT BY AN UNKNOWN VEHICLE COMING FROM THE OTHER DIRECTION.  STATE TROOPERS DO NOT BELIEVE THE DRIVER OF THE BUICK WAS IMPAIRED.

 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says drought during the growing season has made farmers in all of Louisiana eligible to apply for federal aid. The department’s Farm Service Agency says low-interest emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of equipment or livestock. They can also be used to reorganize a farming operation or refinance certain debts. The agency says 60 Louisiana parishes are primary disaster areas, and the other four are adjacent to such parishes.

 

LAFAYETTE POLICE HAVE IDENTIFIED A BODY FOUND FACE DOWN IN WATER SATURDAY MORNING.  THIRTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD VINH LEE WAS FOUND IN THE TWO HUNDRED BLOCK OF TIMOTHY DRIVE.  AN AUTOPSY WILL BE PERFORMED THIS WEEK TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF DEATH.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS CASE IS ASKED TO CALL LAFAYETTE CRIME STOPPERS AT TWO-THREE-TWO-TIPS.

 

JEANERETTE POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A PERSON OF INTEREST IN AN OCTOBER HOMOCIDE.  TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD TYRESE ANTHONY JONES IS WANTED FOR QUESTIONING IN THE HOMOCIDE OF MARCUS RAY ALEXIS.  JONES HAS AN ACTIVE WARRANT FOR UNRELATED CHARGES.  POLICE CHIEF DUSTRY VALLOT SAYS JONES IS KNOWN TO STAY IN THE NEW IBERIA, LAFAYETTE AND BATON ROUGE AREAS.  ANYONE WHO KNOWS HIS LOCATION IS ASKED TO CALL THE JEANERETTE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

Louisiana’s longest-serving state fire marshal is stepping down. Gov. John Bel Edwards says Butch Browning is leaving office to become executive director of the National Association of State Fire Marshals later this month. Browning was first appointed in 2008 and served under two, two-term governors. Edwards said in a news release that State Fire Marshal Deputy Assistant Secretary Daniel H. Wallis will succeed Browning.

 

NEW IBERIA POLICE ARE LOOKING A VEHICLE INVOLVED IN A HIT-AND-RUN AT ABOUT EIGHT-FORTY-FIVE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.  A PERSON DRIVING A GRAY NISSAN ALTIMA, BETWEEN THE YEARS TWENTY-THIRTEEN AND TWENTY-EIGHTEEN, WAS TRAVELING WEST ON HENRY STREET.  THE DRIVER STRUCK A PEDESTRIAN, WHO SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES, AND THE DRIVER CONTINUED WEST WITHOUT STOPPING.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE VEHICLE OR THE DRIVER IS ASKED TO CALL IBERIA CRIME STOPPERS AT THREE-SIX-FOUR-TIPS.
