LAFAYETTE POLICE OFFICERS ARE GETTING NEW LESS LETHAL WEAPONS IN ADDITION TO TASERS AS SAFEGUARDS AGAINST DEADLY FORCE. POLICE CHIEF THOMAS L. GLOVER SENIOR TELLS KLFY TV THAT THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO PRESERVE THE SANCTITY OF LIFE. ONE HUNDRED EIGHT OFFICERS HAVE A LEWIS MACHINE FORTY MILLIMETER LAUNCHER THAT USES FOAM TIPPED BULLETS THAT DON’T PENETRATE BUT DELIVER KINETIC ENERGY TO KNOCK A SUSPECT DOWN AND LET THE OFFICER TAKE CONTROL OF A SITUATION. THEY ALSO ARE INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY THAT SHOOTS AN EIGHT FOOT BARBED KEVLAR CORD THAT WRAPS AROUND A PERSON FROM A RANGE OF TEN TO TWENTY-FIVE FEET.
MANY PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN ACADIA PARISH THAT USE BUSES HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BUSES SHOWING UP LATE FREQUENTLY AND SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL. SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT RICHARD SAYS HE’S AWARE OF THE SITUATION AND THE SCHOOL BOARD IS GOING TO BE WORKING THIS SUMMER TO RECRUIT A HANDFUL OF RELIABLE SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS. HE SAYS THE PANDEMIC PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN THE AVAILABILITY OF BUS DRIVERS WHO WERE ABLE AND WILLING TO WORK THIS YEAR. RICHARD SAYS IT’S A NATIONAL PROBLEM BUT HE PLEDGED TO COMMIT TO MAKING THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR A BETTER EXPERIENCE.
Louisiana state senators have unveiled their version of a nearly $37 billion state operating budget that includes millions of dollars in new spending on education programs, pay raises and legislative pet projects. The Senate’s proposed spending blueprint for the financial year that begins July 1 was pieced together and approved by the Senate Finance Committee. It would include pay raises for K-12 school teachers, college faculty, prison guards, juvenile justice workers and rank-and-file state employees. The TOPS program would fully cover tuition costs for all eligible college students.
THE SEARCH FOR A MISSING TEENAGER IN JENNINGS HAS ENDED. FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD KAMIRON CHAISSON WAS FOUND SAFE YESTERDAY. HE HAD NOT BEEN SEEN LAST THURSDAY.
DUSON POLICE DETAINED A SUSPECT FOR STEALING TEN CANS OF BABY FORMULA AND FOUND HE HAD ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN MORE CANS. THOSE CANS HAD BEEN REPORTEDLY STOLEN FROM STORES IN OTHER CITIES INCLUDING BATON ROUGE AND LAKE CHARLES. THE SUSPECT, JOSEPH CHAMBERS, AGREED TO PAY FOR THE TEN CANS HE STOLE IN DUSON AND DONATE THEM TO THE FAITH HOUSE IN EXCHANGE FOR NOT GOING TO JAIL. CHAMBERS WILL APPEAR IN MAGISTRATE COURT NEXT MONTH CONCERNING THE REMAINING CANS, WHICH ARE IN THE DUSON POLICE EVIDENCE ROOM AWAITING PROOF OF OWNERSHIP.

COVID-NINETEEN HOSPITALIZATIONS IN LOUISIANA DROPPED BY TWENTY-THREE, IN YESTERDAY’S REPORT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, WHICH COVERED A THREE DAY PERIOD. THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS ON VENTILATORS ROSE BY TWO. THERE ARE THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE NEW CONFIRMED CASES IN THE STATE. LOUISIANA HAD EIGHT MORE DEATHS DUE TO COVID-NINETEEN.
ACADIANA HAD FIVE MORE CONFIRMED COVID-NINETEEN DEATHS…THREE IN LAFAYETTE PARISH AND TWO IN VERMILLION PARISH. SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA HAS HAD ZERO DEATHS FOR FOUR STRAIGHT DAYS. THERE WERE FIFTY-SIX NEW CASES IN ACADIANA, INCLUDING TWENTY-TWO IN LAFAYETTE PARISH. THE SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA REGION HAD FIFTEEN NEW CASES OVER THE WEEKEND.
