GOVERNOR JOHN BEL EDWARDS YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED A 150 MILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT AT A REFINERY BASED IN KROTZ SPRINGS. STATE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICIALS SAY THERE WILL BE A SERIES OF PROJECTS AND INVESTMENTS AT DELEK U-S, WHICH IS A 74 THOUSAND BARREL A DAY REFINERY ON LEVEE ROAD. THE PROJECTS ARE EXPECTED TO RESULT IN AS MANY AS 16-HUNDRED CONSTRUCTION JOBS AND AT LEAST THIRTY FULL TIME JOBS WITH AN ANNUAL SALARY OF NINETY THOUSAND DOLLARS PLUS BENEFITS. IT WILL ALSO CREATE AN ADDITIONAL 48-TO-56 INDIRECT JOBS, ACCORDING TO LOUISIANA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
A man who led police on a chase throughout southwest Louisiana before being shot by an officer last year has pleaded guilty to multiple charges. The American Press reports 36-year-old Cody Glenn Light, of Cullman, Alabama, pleaded Monday in state court to 14 charges, including four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, and aggravated flight from an officer. Light’s wild ride through Sulphur and Carlyss included backyards, fields and residences and, at one point, he brandished a gun while threatening drivers on Interstate 10 before he was caught. State District Judge Guy Bradberry sentenced Light to 35 years behind bars.
A DRUG BUST BY THE LAFAYETTE POLICE TACTICAL NARCOTICS TEAM LED TO THE ARREST OF FIVE MEN. THE TEAM CONDUCTED UNDERCOVER BUYS AT THE SPIRIT GAS STATION ON JEFFERSON STREEET. THE MEN WERE ARRESTED AT THE STOREFRONT AND A RESIDENCE ON FIFTH STREET. THE FIVE ARRESTED WERE TRANE BOUDREAUX, JOSEPH HANDY JUNIOR, NICHOLAS J. HANDS, MARCEL KELLY, AND CALVIN NOEL THE THIRD.
Louisiana’s agriculture commissioner says that if a second Mississippi River spillway must be opened, it would wipe out crops on about 25,000 acres of land. Mike Strain says he has notified farmers to move equipment and livestock out of the area. He spoke Thursday at a news conference with Gov. John Bel Edwards and other officials. If Army Corps of Engineers opens the Morganza Floodway west of Baton Rouge, it would be for only the third time.

A LAKE CHARLES WOMAN WAS ARRESTED FOR CRUELTY TO A JUVENILE. 49-YEAR-OLD TRACY H. CHESSON IS ACCUSED OF DRAGGING HER TEN-YEAR-OLD SON ACROSS A YARD BY THE BACK OF HIS NECK. WHEN DETECTIVES CONFRONTED HER, SHE APPEARED TO BE INTOXICATED AND UNCOOPERATIVE. CHESSON WAS BOOKED INTO JAIL AND HER BOND WAS SET AT FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.
THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE BAYOU VERMILLION DISTRICT IS URGING BOATERS TO STAY OFF THE VERMILLION RIVER FOR A WHILE. THE RIVER AS OF LAST NIGHT WAS SIX FEET ABOVE ITS NORMAL FIVE FOOT LEVEL. DAVID CHERAMIE TELLS KATC THAT ITS BEEN ABOVE TEN FEET FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS AND IT MAY STAY THAT WAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK. HE SAYS BOATERS CAUSE WAKES THAT GETS WATER INTO PEOPLE’S BACK YARDS, CAUSING EROSION.
Lawmakers in the Louisiana House agreed to roll back the state sales tax passed in 2018 earlier than its planned mid-2025 expiration date. The proposal from House Republican leader Lance Harris would gradually reduce the 0.45% portion of Louisiana’s 4.45% state sales tax over four years. It would be eliminated by mid-2023, leaving the tax rate at 4%. The House voted 73-21 Thursday for the phase-out plan , which is opposed by Gov. John Bel Edwards.
