A Lake Charles elementary school is teaching parents, too.  J.D. Clifton Elementary School principal Pam Bell says the new Parent Center offers classes in computer, parenting and financial skills.  She tells the American Press that more than 70 parents have signed up for those classes, and another 11 have signed up for high-school equivalency classes.  The program’s aimed at helping parents in a high-need area prepare for college, community college, or jobs available in the area.

 

THE NUMBER OF PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS HAS RISEN IN LAFAYETTE PARISH.  THERE ARE MORE THAN 85-HUNDRED STUDENTS ATTENDING PRIVATE OR PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, WHILE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS ABOUT 31 THOUSAND STUDENTS.  THERE ARE NINE PRIVATE SCHOOLS THAT SAW AN ATTENDANCE INCREASE THIS YEAR…ASCENSION EPISCOPAL, CATHEDRAL CARMEL, FIRST BAPTIST CHRISTIAN, JOHN BAPTIST THE GREAT, LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, ST. CECILIA, STS. LEO-SETON, STS. PETER AND PAUL, AND TEURLINGS CATHOLIC.  ST. THOMAS MOORE HAS THE LARGEST ENROLLMENT OF ALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN LAFAYETTE PARISH WITH 1,076 STUDENTS.

 

Louisiana State Police say a head-on crash killed Loreauville’s mayor and injured four other people after a juvenile jerked the steering wheel of a truck.  Master Trooper Brooks David (DAH-veed) says 65-year-old Albert Broussard was a passenger in a car driven by 62-year-old Phyllis Savoy (SAV-wah) of Loreauville. She’s hospitalized with critical injuries.  David says the juvenile was cited with obstructing the driving mechanism and the adults with failure to wear seat belts.

 

Federal data from a federation of consumer advocacy groups show Louisiana has more than 1,800 bridges that need repairs.  The United States Public Interest Research Group analyzed Federal Highway Administration data.  The Times reports that the group found 1,837 structurally deficient bridges out of nearly 13,000 total.  The report comes as Louisiana grapples with a $12 billion backlog in deferred road and bridge maintenance.

 

AN OBERLIN MAN WALKED TEN MILES ALONG HIGHWAY 164 CARRYING A CROSS.  DARREN KIYOU DUPLECHAIN SAYS HE’S A NEW CHRISTIAN WHO WAS INSPIRED BY THE SCRIPTURE PASSAGE IN THE GOSPEL WHERE CHRIST CHALLENGES HIS FOLLOWERS TO DENY THEMSELVES AND TAKE UP THEIR CROSS AND FOLLOW HIM.  DUPLECHAIN SAYS IT TOOK HIM FOUR HOURS TO WALK THE TEN MILES AND HE RECEIVED LOTS OF SUPPORT.  HE TELLS KPLC TV THAT HE HOPES AT LEAST ONE PERSON WAS DRAWN CLOSER TO JESUS BY SEEING HIM.

THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD IS CONSIDERING A PROPOSAL TO MAKE MYRTLE PLACE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THE SYSTEM’S FLAGSHIP FRENCH IMMERSION SCHOOL.  UNDER THE PROPOSAL, MYRTLE PLACE WOULD NO LONGER ACCEPT KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ENROLLED IN FRENCH IMMERSION.  THOSE STUDENTS ZONED FOR THE SCHOOL, BUT NOT ENROLLED IN FRENCH IMMERSION, WOULD HAVE THE OPTION OF GOING TO BROADMOOR OR S-J MONTGOMERY ELEMENTARY.  THE SCHOOL SYSTEM’S WORLD LANGUAGE SPECIALIST, NICOLE BOUDREAUX HAS TOLD THE BOARD THEY NEED TO ACT QUICKLY ON THE PROPOSAL SO PARENTS CAN PLAN FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

Cultural preservation experts have kicked off plans to transform Arnaudville into a French immersion hub.  Jacqueline Cochran, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation, said in a news release issued Sunday and received by The Advocate project planners will use the vacant 25,000-foot St. Luke Hospital as a business incubator and French cultural center.  Cochran says the first step involves sizing up cultural assets, planning the facility and creating a business outline.  The project is funded by a National Endowment for the Arts grant and matching funds from the St. Landry Parish and St. Martin Parish governments.
