A NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD OPELOUSAS MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING OUTSIDE THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HALL ON L-A ONE-OH-FOUR IN THE OPELOUSAS AREA. SHOTS WERE FIRED INTO TWO VEHICLES AND DAMIEN JOSEPH LASTRAPES JUNIOR WAS STRUCK BY THE GUNFIRE. HE WAS DROPPED OFF AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL AT AROUND ONE-THIRTY SUNDAY MORNING WHERE HE LATER DIED, AND THE SAINT LANDRY PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE WAS NOTIFIED. A MAN ENTERED THE BUSINESS WEARING A BLACK MASK ON HIS FACE AND CARRYING A GUN. HE DEMANDED MONEY FROM THE EMPLOYEES AND LEFT WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF CASH. The Louisiana Workforce Commission is launching a new program to help combat the nationwide truck driver shortage. WBRZ-TV reports the “Drive Your Future” training grant offers those who qualify a chance to participate in a five-week apprenticeship that, if completed, will result in the student obtaining a commercial driver’s license. The program comes at no cost to the student. Classes begin in mid-February.
A DEQUINCY MAN DIED FRIDAY FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED IN A CRASH THAT HAPPENED THURSDAY MORNING. TWENTY-YEAR-OLD LOGAN COPELAND WAS TRAVELING SOUTH ON L-A TWENTY-SEVEN WHEN HE SOMEHOW ENDED UP IN THE NORTHBOUND LANES. THE DRIVER OF AN ONCOMING PICKUP TRIED TO AVOID COPELAND’S CAR BUT STRUCK IT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES THAT LATER LED TO HIS DEATH. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER IN THE PICKUP SUFFERED MODERATE AND MINOR INJURIES. IMPAIRMENT IS NOT SUSPECTED.

The University of Louisiana Lafayette says its rate of positive COVID-19 tests is going down, and classes will begin moving back from online to classrooms today. U-L said in a news release Friday that all classes should be back to normal in two weeks, by Feb. 21. The school says intramural sports will resume. Officials say in-person student organization events may continue as long as masks are worn, and proper social distancing can be maintained.
Federal investigators say a helicopter was seen descending toward the ground in a nose-down position before it crashed near Houma, killing the pilot and a passenger. The account was included Friday in the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report on the Jan. 14 crash. The report says data showed the Bell 407 helicopter was at an altitude of about 1,200 feet before descending. The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 50-year-old Dana Burt of Kaplan and 30-year-old Dylan Horn of Panama City, Florida.
AN ARREST WARRANT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR A CHURCH POINT MAN, WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN A SHOOTOUT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON ON NORTH KELLY STREET IN CHURCH POINT. A NEARBY RESIDENCE, WITH TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND TWO ADULTS IN IT, WAS STRUCK TWICE BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED. EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD DAVONTA JENKINS OF CHURCH POINT WAS ARRESTED AFTER THE SHOOTOUT AND CHARGED WITH FOUR COUNTS OF ATTEMPTED SECOND-DEGREE MURDER AND ASSAULT BY DRIVE-BY SHOOTING. THE ARREST WARRANT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIRTY-YEAR-OLD KENNY LEGER, WHO IS WANTED ON THE SAME CHARGES.
