A SAINT MARTIN PARISH WOMAN LOST EVERYTHING IN A HOUSE FIRE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. LAURA ROBERTS TELLS KLFY TV THAT SHE HAD LIVED IN THE HOUSE ON GEORGE DUPUIS ROAD SINCE SHE WAS FIVE YEARS OLD. A NEIGHBOR WHO CALLED NINE-ONE-ONE WHEN HE SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE ROOF SAYS HE AND THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY WILL HELP SUPPORT ROBERTS. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

JEFF DAVIS ELECTRIC COOP CUSTOMERS HAVE SEEN AN INCREASE IN THEIR ELECTRIC BILLS. SOME HAVE TOLD KLFY TV THAT THEY’VE SEEN THEIR BILL DOUBLE. THE COOP SENT A LETTER IN DECEMBER TO CUSTOMERS WARNING THEM ABOUT THE INCREASE DUE TO HIGHER COAL DELIVERY COSTS BECAUSE OF THE LOW WATER LEVELS IN THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THE COOP SAYS FUEL COSTS HAVE DECREASED AND CUSTOMERS SHOULD NOTICE LOWER RATES BEGINNING NEXT MONTH.
ON TUESDAY, THE LAFAYETTE PARISH COUNCIL INTRODUCED AN ORDINANCE ATHORIZING MAYOR-PRESIDENT MONIQUE BOULET TO PURCHASE SIX ACRES OF PROPERTY FOR A NORTHEAST LIBRARY BRANCH. THE ORDINANCE WILL BE VOTED ON AT THE MARCH FIFTH MEETING. IN SEPTEMER, THE LAFAYETTE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF CONTROL AGREED TO ACCEPT A PROPOSAL FOR SIX ACRES OF LAND IN THE ONE HUNDRED BLOCK OF SHADOW BLUFF DRIVE, OFF OF LOUISIANA AVENUE. PLANNERS SAY THAT, IF THERE ARE NO DELAYS, THE NEW LIBRARY COULD OPEN IN TWENTY-TWENTY-SEVEN OR TWENTY-TWENTY-EIGHT.
RENOVATIONS SET TO BEGIN IN JULY FOR DONALD GARDNER STADIUM IN OPELOUSAS ARE BEING MOVED BACK SIX MONTHS. MAYOR JULIUS ALSANDOR SAYS, IF THEY HAD STARTED IN JULY, THE RENOVATIONS WOULD BE TAKING PLACE DURING THE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON. HE SAYS BY PUSHING BACK THE RENOVATIONS TO THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER WILL ALLOW TEAMS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYING THERE TO UTILIZE THE FIELD. BILL RODIER OF SAINT LANDRY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SAYS KEEPING THE STADIUM OPEN DURING THE SEASON WILL ALLOW THE CITY A CHANCE TO CAPITALIZE ON THE SUCCESS OF OPELOUSAS HIGH SCHOOL, WITH EXPECTED LARGE CROWDS TO COME SEE THE DEFENDING STATE CHAMPIONS AT HOME.
Louisiana lawmakers are considering a bill that would eliminate the chance of parole for nearly all prisoners convicted after Aug. 1. There would be a few exceptions, including groups for whom it is constitutionally required, like juveniles sentenced to life terms. The legislation is part of the Legislature’s list of bills that are being discussed during a special session, in an effort to tamp down violent crime in the state. The tough-on-crime policies could overhaul parts of the Louisiana’s criminal justice system and public safety sector.
BREAUX BRIDGE POLICE MADE AN ARREST THIS WEEK IN CONNECTION TO A DRIVE-BY SHOOTING. ONE PERSON WAS WOUNDED IN THE DRIVE-BY WHICH HAPPENED FEBRUARY TWELFTH ON LENA DRIVE. AZYRIAH ISOM WAS ARRESTED MONDAY ON A CHARGE OF PRINCIPAL TO ATTEMPTED SECOND-DEGREE MURDER. POLICE ANTICIPATE FURTHER ARRESTS AND THEY ASK ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE SHOOTING TO CALL THE BREAUX BRIDGE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
