STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF LANDRY DROPPED A BOMBSHELL MONDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HE ANNOUNCED THE ARREST OF SIX LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FEDERAL EMPLOYEES FOR PUBLIC CORRUPTION.  JULIE DARCE REPORTS.

THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE GOLDEN NUGGET CASINO IN LAKE CHARLES WAS THE VICTIM OF A DATA BREACH OVER A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD OF TIME.  LANDRY’S INCORPORATED, WHICH OWNS AROUND 500 RESTAURANTS AND CASINOS, SAYS THE DATA BREACH OF CREDIT CARD AND DEBIT CARD INFORMATION OCCURRED BETWEEN MAY 4TH, 2014, AND MARCH 15TH OF LAST YEAR, AND AGAIN BETWEEN MAY 5TH AND DECEMBER THIRD OF LAST YEAR.  THE COMPANY BECAME AWARE OF THE DATA BREACH WHEN THEY NOTICED SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY REGARDING PAYMENTS MADE WITH CREDIT AND DEBIT CARDS.  THEY DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN AFFECTED.

 

Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot says they’re investigating a death after a body was found along Highway 13 just outside of the city.  KLFY-TV reports a group of rabbit hunters, who were running their dogs to scout for game, made the discovery Monday morning.  Fontenot says authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. It’s unclear if the police department is investigating the case as a homicide or suicide.

 

A review panel that was formed last year in response to the controversy over the Common Core education standards is nearing the end of its work.  Formed by state lawmakers, the standards review committee meets today in New Orleans to make final decisions on which English and math benchmarks should be kept, tossed or tweaked.  About 100 educators, broken into subject matter subcommittees, spent about six months on the work. They’re recommending 18 percent of English standards be changed across grades and 26 percent of math standards.

 

A LAFAYETTE ATTORNEY HAS FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THREE COMPANIES FOR CONTAMINATION OF THE SOIL AND GROUNDWATER AT THE SITE OF A FORMER RAIL YARD IN LAFAYETTE.  ATTORNEY WILLIAM GOODELL PROVIDED COURT DOCUMENTS PROVING THE CONTAMINATION EXISTS AT THE FORTY ACRE SITE OWNED, LEASED OR OPERATED BY UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD, CONSOLIDATED COMPANIES, AND SOUTHERN PACIFIC MOTOR COMPANY.  GOODELL WANTS THE COURT TO ACT RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF THE CONTAMINATION MIGRATING TO NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES AND TO THE CHICOT AQUIFER.  THE LAWSUIT WANTS A DECLARATORY JUDGEMENT FINDING THE COMPANIES LIABLE FOR THE CLEANUP OF THE PROPERTY.

 

CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARE INVESTIGATING A STABBING INCIDENT IN SULPHUR.  IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY EVENING AROUND 5:45 BEHIND THE HOUSTON RIVER ROAD FIRE STATION.  KIM MYERS WITH THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS ONE WOMAN STABBED ANOTHER WOMAN, BUT THE WOUND’S WERE NOT LIFE THREATENING.  SHE SAYS THEY HAVE NOT YET ARRESTED THE STABBING SUSPECT.

 

A JUDGE HAS RULED THAT A MARDI GRAS PARADE IN ST. MARTINVILLE SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY WILL NOT HAPPEN.  U-S DISTRICT JUDGE REBECCA DOHERTY DETERMINED THAT A PERMIT FOR THE NEWCOMER’S PARADE WAS INVALID BECAUSE IT WAS ISSUED UNDER ORDINANCES THAT WERE UNCONSTITUTIONAL.  CITY OFFICIALS HAD ORIGINALLY CANCELLED THE PARADE AT THE REQUEST OF POLICE CHIEF CALDER HEBERT BECAUSE HE SAID THE CITY NEEDED MORE POLICE PRESENCE AND 200 THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF BARRICADES.  THE NEWCOMER’S CLUB FILED A FEDERAL LAWSUIT IN RESPONSE TO THE CANCELLATION LAST MONTH.
