The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a 40-year-old Sunset man is accused of illegal night hunting, hunting from a moving vehicle, and hunting from a public road.  Spokesman Adam Einck says agents arrested Allen W. Moreau on Jan. 3 in St. Landry Parish after he shot a deer from his vehicle with a .243 rifle.  He says they had set up surveillance because area hunters complained about night hunting in the area.  If convicted on all three counts, Moreau could get up to nine months in jail and $1,800 in fines plus $1,624 restitution for the deer.

The owner of a troubled hotel in Lafayette could be forced to sell the property to make way for a police substation under a measure introduced at Tuesday’s City-Parish Council meeting.  City-Parish President Joey Durel’s administration began talks last year about possibly buying the Lesspay motel, knocking it down, then building a substation and public plaza in its place to bring new life to the area.

The Advocate reports the council introduced a measure Tuesday to declare the project a “public necessity,” which opens the door for negotiations to buy the property either through a voluntary deal or a forced sale under the expropriation process.  A final vote is set for Jan. 20.
