(AP) Thanks to Lafayette General Medical Center, treating students is becoming easier. The Lafayette General Medical Center Foundation has donated the technology to launch a telemedicine clinic at Ossun Elementary, and it has changed how the school nurse’s office operates. Ossun’s school nurse, Maurdey Durand, tells KATC-TV that the program now allows her to connect with a doctor through a TV screen to treat students. And, she says, it’s beneficial for the students who, though aren’t feeling well, might be well enough to stay in class. Ossun Elementary is the flagship campus for the technology. Each setup costs between $15,000 and $30,000. Cian Robinson, the foundation’s executive director, says new telemedicine clinics will open in the next 90 days at Carencro Heights Elementary, Live Oak Elementary, and Carencro High.
(AP) Nearly two dozen new laws take effect with the start of 2015 in Louisiana. The measures were passed in the last legislative session. They are mostly minor changes, as most new laws approved by lawmakers each year begin in August. Smoking will be banned near state-owned office buildings. Drunken driving statutes will be rewritten to clear up discrepancies. Payday lenders will have to offer no-fee installment plans. Teenagers or older will be able to register to vote when obtaining a driver’s license, though they still won’t be able to vote until they turn 18. Also due Jan. 1 is a tally from law enforcement agencies of the number of untested rape kits on their shelves. The law is designed to quantify the backlog so it can be eliminated.
