Youngsville, Louisiana’s fastest growing city, is working on its first-ever master plan.  A Lafayette Parish area that once was known for sugarcane and cattle pastures is booming with subdivisions, restaurants and stores. Youngsville’s population of 12,000 is a 350 percent increase from 1990.  The Advertiser reports the city plans an open house Tuesday to discuss its new master plan, which maps out infrastructure expansion for the next decade.

 

THE CALCASIEU PARISH SCHOOL BOARD HAS PLACED A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER ON LEAVE AFTER SHE WAS ACCUSED OF SHOPLIFTING.  MICHELLE NORTH, WHO TEACHES AT S-J WELSH MIDDLE SCHOOL WAS ARRESTED SHORTLY AFTER TEN A-M FRIDAY MORNING.  SHE ALLEGEDLY TOOK MERCHANDISE FROM  PARTNER’S, A CLOTHING STORE IN LAFAYETTE, ON NOVEMBER 24TH.  NORTH, WHO WAS IDENTIFIED IN SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM THE STORE, WAS RELEASED AFTER POSTING A ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.

 

A FORMER CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER, ACCUSED OF SENDING EXPLICIT PHOTOS TO THREE 16-YEAR-OLDS AND HAVING INAPPROPRIATE CONTACT WITH ONE OF THEM, HAS BEEN CHARGED.  JULIE DARCE HAS MORE.

Louisiana first lady Supriya Jindal has written a book about the governor’s mansion and is giving it to more than 300 school libraries around the state.  The Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana’s Children is donating the book as an effort to promote children’s literacy. In a statement, the first lady says she wrote “Louisiana Governor’s Mansion: Our Treasured Home” with the help of her three children.

The first lady’s foundation has donated interactive whiteboard technology, computers, books, equipment for art and science classes and other items to classrooms around Louisiana in recent years.

 

THE MAYOR OF YOUNGSVILLE IS ASKING THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE COST OF ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN THE AREA WHERE A NEW HIGH SCHOOL IS TO BE BUILT.  MAYOR KEN RITTER SAYS THE COSTS FOR ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IS HIGHER THAN THEY EXPECTED.  LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT DONALD AGUILLARD SAYS THEY DID NOT BUDGET FOR INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE SCHOOL AND, IF THEY DID CONTRIBUTE, IT WOULD HAVE TO COME OUT OF THE MONEY THAT THEY HAVE TARGETED TOWARDS THE BUILDING.  THE YOUNGSVILLE CITY COUNCIL LAST WEEK REJECTED A PROPOSAL TO ASK THE SCHOOL BOARD TO CONTRIBUTE TO INFRASTRUCTURE COSTS.

 

THE SEVEN SLOT SOCIETY OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA HELD ITS SECOND ANNUAL TOY DRIVE YESTERDAY.  THEY COLLECTED NEW AND SLIGHTLY USED TOYS AT THE CALCASIEU PARISH POLICE JURY’S PARKING LOT.  PRESIDENT JARED CHANDLER SAYS THE JINGLE JEEP DRIVE WAS A SUCCESS AS THEY EASILY SURPASSED LAST YEAR’S COLLECTIONS, COMPLETELY FILLING UP A TRAILER.  THE TOYS WERE DONATED TO BRENNAN’S BLESSINGS IN WESTLAKE.

 

A MAN, WHO LED STATE POLICE ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN ST. MARTIN AND LAFAYETTE PARISHES, CAUSED A THREE VEHICLE CRASH AT THE CORNER OF WEST PINHOOK AND CARMEL DRIVE.  A TROOPER TRIED TO PULL OVER LOUIS MORMAN ON L-A 94 NEAR THE LAFAYETTE AND ST. MARTIN PARISH BORDER.  MORMAN RAN A RED LIGHT CAUSING THE THREE VEHICLE CRASH THAT INJURED MORMAN, A STATE TROOPER AND TWO MOTORISTS, THOUGH NONE SERIOUSLY.  MORMAN THEN TRIED TO RUN AWAY, BUT WAS STOPPED WITH THE USE OF A STUN GUN.

 

Oilfield services company Baker Hughes says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. last week declined by 28 to 709.  Houston’s Baker Hughes said Friday that 524 rigs were seeking oil and 185 explored for natural gas. A year ago, with oil prices almost double the prices now, 1,893 rigs were active.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.
