IOTA POLICE ARRESTED A STUDENT AT IOTA HIGH SCHOOL FOR ALLEGEDLY BRINGING A LOADED MAGAZINE ON CAMPUS.  THE SCHOOL CAMPUS WAS PLACED ON LOCKDOWN FOR SEVERAL HOURS WHILE THEY SEARCHED FOR A FIREARM, WHICH WAS NOT LOCATED.  THE ALL-CLEAR WAS GIVEN AT AROUND ONE THIRTY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  THE STUDENT WAS BOOKED INTO THE ACADIA PARISH JAIL BUT THE CHARGES WERE NOT RELEASED.

 

THE LAFAYETTE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT HAS SEVEN NEW CANDIDATES FROM ACROSS THE NATION SEEKING TO BE THE CITY’S NEW POLICE CHIEF.  LAST MAY, JUDITH ESTORGE STEPPED DOWN FROM THE POSITION AND MAYOR PRESIDENT MONIQUE BOULET PROMISED A NATIONAL SEARCH FOR THE NEXT CHIEF.  OVER THE SUMMER, THE ONLY APPLICANTS WERE FROM SOUTH LOUISIANA.  THE CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED RAISING THE CHIEF’S SALARY TO ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY THOUSAND TO ATTRACT A WIDER POOL OF CANDIDATES.

 

LOUISIANA IS ONE OF SEVEN STATES WHERE SOME BLACK RESIDENTS WERE THE RECIPIENTS OF RACIST TEXTS.  LOUISIANA ATTORNEY GENERAL LIZ MURRILL SAYS SHE’S AWARE OF THE TEXTS AND HAS DIRECTED THE STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE ORIGIN OF THEM.  SHE CALLED THE SPAM TEXTS RACIST, VILE, AND INTENDED TO DIVIDE.  THE FBI AND THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION ARE ALSO INVESTIGATING.

THE FURNITURE COMPANY, AMERICAN FREIGHT, HAS DECIDED TO CLOSE ALL THEIR LOCATIONS, ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS FILED IN U-S BANKRUPTCY COURT.  THAT INCLUDES FOUR STORES IN LOUISIANA.  ONE OF THEM IS LOCATED AT TWO-THOUSAND-ONE NORTHWEST EVANGELINE THRUWAY IN LAFAYETTE.  DAVID ORLOFSKY WITH THE FRANCHISE GROUP THAT OWNS AMERICAN FREIGHT SAYS THE DEBTORS DETERMINED THE LIMITED PROFITABILITY OF THE STORES COULD NOT SUPPORT ITS RIGHTSIZING THROUGH REORGANIZATION.

 

THE LOUSIANA HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE APPROVED THE GOVERNOR’S PROPOSAL TO LOWER THE STATE INCOME TAX FROM FOUR-POINT-TWO-FIVE PERCENT TO THREE PERCENT ACROSS THE BOARD.  IT GOES NEXT TO THE FULL HOUSE FOR A VOTE.  IF THE LEGISLATURE APPROVES IT, VOTERS ACROSS THE STATE WOULD ALSO HAVE TO APPROVE IT.  GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY WANTS TO EXPAND SALES TAXES TO MAKE UP THE AMOUNT LOST BY REDUCING INCOME TAXES.

 

THE CAPTAIN OF A SINKING SAILBOAT WAS RESCUED LAST WEEKEND BY THE VERMILLION PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE MARINE DIVISION.  LIEUTENANT KEVIN HEBERT AND CORPORAL CODY WALDMANN WERE CALLED OUT TO SOUTHWEST PASS AND WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN COMMUNICATION WITH THE CAPTAIN UNTIL HIS BOAT WAS FOUND NEAR MARSH ISLAND.  THEY SAFELY REMOVED THE CAPTAIN AND HIS BELONGINGS FROM THE SAILBOAT.  THE TWO STAYED WITH THE CAPTAIN UNTIL AGENTS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES ARRIVED TO TAKE THE HIM TO A MARINA.
