Voters in Louisiana’s Nov. 13 election will be deciding whether to back two constitutional amendments that would heavily rewrite state sales and income tax laws to more closely match the regulations of other states. The tax amendments were backed by overwhelming bipartisan votes in the House and Senate and have the support of Gov. John Bel Edwards, but the two measures have provoked strong disagreement among others as early voting is underway. Constitutional Amendment 1 would start the centralization of Louisiana’s sales tax collections. Amendment 2 is a complicated tax swap plan to disentangle Louisiana’s income taxes from federal tax collections.
NOT ALL FELONY SUSPECTS ARE ABLE TO BE BOOKED INTO THE JEFF DAVIS PARISH JAIL BECAUSE OF COVID-NINETEEN PROCEDURES. FELONY SUSPECTS BOOKED INTO THE JAIL HAVE TO SPEND TEN DAYS IN QUARANTINE CELLS BEFORE THEY ARE RELEASED INTO THE GENERAL POPULATION, A PROCEDURE, ACCORDING TO CHIEF DEPUTY CHRIS IVEY, WHICH HAS PREVENTED ANY OUTBREAKS. HOWEVER, IF ALL THE QUARANTINE CELLS ARE IN USE, THEY CAN’T TAKE THE PRISONER, WHICH IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR THE CITIES IN THE PARISH THAT HAVE THEIR OWN JAIL, BUT JENNINGS DOES NOT HAVE ONE. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS IF A SUSPECT IS VIOLENT, THEY TRY TO TRANSFER THEM TO ANOTHER JAIL BUT OTHERWISE THE SUSPECT IS CITED AND DIRECTED TO SHOW UP AT THEIR COURT DATE.
SOME LAFAYETTE SCHOOL TEACHERS COMPLAINED ABOUT CONTENT PRESENTED AT AN INSERVICE TRAINING FOR PARISH SCHOOL TEACHERS ON MONDAY. THE TEACHERS, WHO ASKED TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS, TOLD KATC THAT THE SESSIONS, DEALING WITH SCHOOL SHOOTINGS, INCLUDED GRAPHIC VIDEO FROM PREVIOUS SCHOOL SHOOTINGS AND EXPLICIT CONTENT FROM POPULAR VIDEO GAMES. SUPERINTENDENT IRMA TROSCLAIR APOLOGIZED TO THOSE OFFENDED AND SAID, ONCE THEY SAW THE GRAPHIC CONTENT IN THE FIRST SESSION, IT WAS REMOVED FOR THE NEXT SESSION. SHE SAID IN A STATEMENT THAT THIS FEEDBACK WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION FOR FUTURE INSERVICE SESSIONS.
SOME NEW IBERIA RESIDENTS ARE UPSET TO SEE INCREASES IN THEIR UTILITY BILLS. PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER MIKE FRANCIS ATTENDED LAST NIGHT’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.
