THE SITE WHERE A COSTCO SHOPPING CENTER IS BEING BUILT OFF OF KALISTE SALOOM IN LAFAYETTE WAS FLOODED YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF A WATER MAIN BREAK.  THE WATER HAD TO BE SHUT OFF FOR SEVERAL HOURS FOR WORKERS TO MAKE REPAIRS.  AS A RESULT, SIX BUSINESSES, INCLUDING A MOVIE THEATRE AND THREE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS HAD TO CLOSE.  LUS AND THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS ISSUED A BOIL ADVISORY FOR THE AFFECTED BUSINESSES AS A PRECAUTION.

 

A Roanoke truck stop casino employee is accused of taking more than $40,000 from her employer over the past year.  Jefferson Davis parish authorities tell the American Press 54-year-old Felicity Hebert, of Mermentau, was booked with felony theft.  Sheriff ‘s Office spokesman Christopher Ivey says deputies obtained information from the Petro’s Truck Stop Casino bookkeeper that an employee had taken money and used it to gamble on video poker machines.  Ivey says Hebert admitted stealing the money and said she has gambling problem.

 

Paul Prudhomme, the Cajun who popularized spicy Louisiana cuisine and became one of the first American restaurant chefs to achieve worldwide fame, died Thursday. He was 75.  Tiffanie Roppolo, the CFO of Prudhomme’s businesses, told The Associated Press that he died early Thursday after a brief illness.  Prudhomme, who was a native of Opelousas, became prominent in the early 1980s, soon after opening K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen, a French Quarter diner that served the meals of his childhood.

 

A PROTEST IS PLANNED FOR THIS SATURDAY AT THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD OFFICES IN BATON ROUGE.  IT’S ONE OF HUNDREDS OF PROTESTS PLANNED FOR TOMORROW TO END GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES FOR THE NATION’S LARGEST ABORTION PROVIDER.  THE ORGANIZER OF THE BATON ROUGE PROTEST, RUSSELL MARINO, CALLS ON ALL PROLIFERS IN THE AREA TO ATTEND THE RALLY.

THE PROTEST WILL BE FROM NINE TO ELEVEN TOMORROW MORNING AT THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD OFFICES, LOCATED AT 39-55 GOVERNMENT STREET IN BATON ROUGE.

 

THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN YOUNGSVILLE SHOULD SIMPLY BE CALLED YOUNGSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL.  AT LEAST THAT’S HOW THE YOUNGSVILLE CITY COUNCIL FEELS AS LAST NIGHT THEY PASSED A RESOLUTION UNANIMOUSLY ASKING THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD TO NAME IT YOUNGSVILLE HIGH.  THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS FORMED A NAMING COMMITTEE FOR THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH HASN’T YET HAD ITS FIRST MEETING.  COUNCILMAN JAMEY ABSHIRE TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT HE BELIEVES THE RESOLUTION WILL CARRY A LOT OF WEIGHT WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.

 

A FORMER SHERIFF OF CAMERON PARISH DIED THURSDAY EVENING.  SONO SAVOIE WAS 92.  HE PASSED AWAY IN LAKE CHARLES.  SAVOIE WAS CAMERON PARISH SHERIFF FOR 24 YEARS.  FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE PENDING AT MIGUEZ FUNERAL HOME IN JENNINGS.

 

THE POLICE CHIEF FOR MAMOU HAS RESIGNED LESS THAN A YEAR INTO HIS TERM.  JULIE DARCE REPORTS.

Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals says one newly reported case of West Nile virus and two additional deaths from the disease have been reported this week.  That brings the total number of cases to 55 and the number of deaths to four.  Thirty-four of the reported cases were dangerous infections of the brain or spinal cord, and seven were of flu-like West Nile fever.
