AS PARISH TAXES HAVE REACHED A CRITICAL LEVEL, A FOUR PERSON LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL COMMITTEE HAS BEEN FORMED TO LOOK AT WAYS TO RAISE REVENUES.  COUNCIL CHAIRMAN KENNETH BOUDREAUX AND COUNCILMAN JAY CASTILLE, WHO BOTH SERVE ON THE NEW COMMITTEE, SAY THEY’LL LOOK AT ALL OPTIONS, INCLUDING COMBINING SOME PROPERTY TAXES.  BOUDREAUX TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER THEY MAY ALSO ASK OTHER TAXING BODIES NOT UNDER THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT’S CONTROL TO CONSIDER DOING WITHOUT NON-VITAL EXPENSES TO HELP WITH MORE VITAL NEEDS.  THE COMMITTEE WILL HOLD IT’S FIRST MEETING THURSDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUE ON MOST THURSDAY NIGHTS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

 

THE SULPHUR POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS RELEASED A LIST OF RECOVERED ITEMS THAT ARE PILING UP.  CAPTAIN JASON GULLY TELLS KPLC TV THAT MOST OF THE ITEMS WERE JUST FOUND, AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE THE OWNER OF SUCH ITEMS AS CHECKBOOKS, WALLETS, AND TOOLS.  TO CLAIM AN ITEM, YOU MUST HAVE PROOF OF OWNERSHIP.  IF ITEMS ARE NOT CLAIMED BY THE END OF FEBRUARY, THE DEPARTMENT WILL FILE FOR A COURT ORDER FROM SULPHUR CITY COURT SO THEY CAN BE DONATED OR DESTROYED.

 

A ST. MARTINVILLE WOMAN HAS BEEN CITED FOR AN ACCIDENT SATURDAY NIGHT THAT LEFT ELEVEN CHILDREN INJURED.  32-YEAR-OLD CHARLEEN HAYES WAS TRAVELING ON L-A 353 IN AN S-U-V WHEN SHE FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE, OVERCORRECTED AND ROLLED THE VEHICLE INTO A DITCH, TRAPPING FRONT SIDE PASSENGERS.  A TOTAL OF 13 PEOPLE HAD TO BE TREATED AT HOSPITALS FOR INJURIES RANGING FROM MINOR TO MODERATE.  HAYES WAS CHARGED WITH SEVERAL VIOLATIONS INCLUDING TEN COUNTS OF NO CHILD RESTRAINTS, NO DRIVER’S LICENSE AND NO INSURANCE.

 

The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by 18 this week to 712.  A year ago, 619 rigs were active.  Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes said Friday that 566 rigs sought oil and 145 explored for natural gas this week. Louisiana was up by two rigs.

A KINDER MAN WAS KILLED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH ON I-TEN TWO MILES WEST OF SULPHUR AT AROUND ONE A-M SATURDAY.  ACCORDING TO STATE POLICE TROOP D, 61-YEAR-OLD BERKMAN CLYDE COLE WAS TRAVELING WEST ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HE WENT OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY.  HIS VEHICLE STRUCK A CULVERT AND ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE COMING TO REST AGAINST SOME TREES.  COLE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE AND TOXICOLOGY SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM HIM FOR ANALYSIS.

 

THE INDIAN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB IN OPELOUSAS UNVEILED A MEMORIAL IN HONOR OF 41-YEAR-OLD CHAD BELLOW, WHO DIED LAST JUNE OF BRAIN CANCER.  BELLOW WAS AN HONORARY MEMBER OF 14 LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND WORKED AT HIS DAD’S RESTAURANT, RAY’S DINER, GREETING CUSTOMERS.  HE ALSO WAS A LONG TIME MEMBER AT THE COUNTRY CLUB, WHO WENT THERE EVERY TUESDAY.  MANAGER TROY YOUNG TELLS THE USA TODAY NETWORK THAT CHAD WAS AN INSPIRATION WHO IS LOVED AND MISSED BY EVERYONE THERE.

 

Merryville has always been a quiet Louisiana town, but lately, that hasn’t been the case.  Mayor David Eaves says authorities have received vandalism, theft and overall mischief complaints that might be linked to the number of children they’re seeing out late at night.  Eaves tells KPLC-TV that there’s no need for children to be roaming the town between midnight and 6 a.m. So, he’s proposing a curfew for children 17 and under.  The town will discuss and vote on the issue Feb. 13.
