LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez III will leave his post at the end of the fiscal year. Nunze announced his retirement Monday after a career in higher education spanning 45 years. He’s been chancellor at LSUE since 1996 and also serves as professor of biology. LSU, in a news release, says it will conduct a national search for his replacement.

THE TURNOVER RATE AMONG TEACHERS IN THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM IS DOWN ALMOST SIXTY PERCENT, COMPARED TO LAST YEAR. THE DISTRICT’S HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR BRUCE LEININGER SAYS THERE WERE 22 TEACHER WHO RESIGNED BETWEEN JULY AND DECEMBER, COMPARED TO 73 TEACHER RESIGNATIONS OVER THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR. THE LAFAYETTE PARISH ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY. ACCORDING TO THEIR FIGURES, 42 TEACHERS RESIGNED BETWEEN AUGUST AND NOVEMBER, AN INCREASE OVER THEIR FIGURES FROM LAST YEAR.
U.S. Sen. David Vitter has changed his mind on the Common Core education standards. Four months ago, Vitter, a Republican running for governor, described his strong support for the multistate standards. But on Monday, the senator said Louisiana needs to stop using Common Core. Term-limited Gov. Bobby Jindal also opposes Common Core.

THE IBERIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE COLLISION HAPPENED AT THE INTERSECTION OF HOPKINS AND WASHINGTON STREETS IN NEW IBERIA. REPORTS INDICATE THE DRIVER OF THE 2013 KIA FAILED TO HEED THE WARNINGS OF THE APPROACHING TRAIN AND WAS STRUCK. THE DRIVER ESCAPED WITH MINOR INJURIES.
A 32-year-old Westlake woman has been arrested on a charge of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile after a 2-year-old boy was severely burned. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers tells KPLC-TV that Melynnie Fondel was arrested last week and is being held on $600,000 bond. It was unknown if she has an attorney. Myers says doctors told detectives the burns were not consistent with accidental burns but were consistent with being submerged in hot water.

A new audit says the state Department of Revenue overpaid $22.6 million in refunds to two companies, and the only reason the mistake was caught was because the businesses returned the money. Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera’s Office said in a review released Monday that the overpayments last year went through five levels of state review before they were sent. The revenue department says the complicated refunds were from legal settlements that involved multiple tax periods and tax type. The revenue department says it’s added new oversight.
