A LAFAYETTE WOMAN WAS KILLED YESTERDAY MORNING IN AN ACCIDENT THAT HAPPENED ON RUE DE BELIER.  49-YEAR-OLD DAWN MARTIN WAS TRAVELING IN A MAZDA C-X-9 WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY THE DRIVER OF A DODGE DAKOTA, WHO, FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON, HAD CROSSED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.  MARTIN WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD.  THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT POLICE DO NOT SUSPECT ALCOHOL TO BE A FACTOR.

 

A Louisiana man has been arrested after allegedly trying to kill a Cameron Parish sheriff’s deputy.  KPLC-TV reports the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was pursuing 64-year-old Timothy Raffield, of Hackberry, on Wednesday night when the man crashed his vehicle.

Deputies say Raffield then fired on the deputy with a shotgun.  The deputy was not hurt and Raffield later surrendered.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards faced his two Republican challengers in their first head-to-head debate, and the Democratic incumbent spent much of his time fending off reproach of his performance in office.  U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham tangled with Edwards most directly Thursday night. At points during the debate, the two men talked over each other in disagreements.  Businessman Eddie Rispone dismissed the exchanges as the debate of “two career politicians.”  The election is Oct. 12.

 

LAFAYETTE UTILITIES SYSTEM WAS THREE HOURS LATE NOTIFYING STATE POLICE AFTER HYDRATED LIME WAS ACCIDENTALLY RELEASED FROM THEIR BUCHANON STREET WATER PLANT ON FEBRUARY THIRD, ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS OBTAINED BY THE ADVOCATE.  TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS OF LIME RAINED DOWN ON HOMES AND BUSINESSES, FORCING 27 RESIDENTS TO EVACUATE FOR TWO DAYS AND 14 PEOPLE RECEIVED MEDICAL TREATMENT.  INTERIM L-U-S DIRECTOR JEFF STEWART SAYS THEY NOTIFIED THE NATIONAL RESPONSE CENTER HOTLINE AND HAD ASSUMED THEY WOULD CONTACT ALL THE NECESSARY PARTIES INCLUDING STATE POLICE.  THE UTILITY WAS CITED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY BUT STEWART SAYS THEY HAVE NOT BEEN FINED AND HE DOESN’T ANTICIPATE THAT THEY WILL.

 

 

A TEXAS COUPLE WERE ARRESTED WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN JEFF DAVIS PARISH AFTER THE MOTHER’S THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILD WAS FOUND WANDERING AROUND IN A TRUCK STOP PARKING LOT.  SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES WERE CALLED WHEN THE TODDLER WAS FOUND IN THE PARKING LOT AT THE PETO TRUCK STOP IN ROANOKE.  THE MOTHER, 30-YEAR-OLD JESSICA GAIL MORGAN AND HER BOYFRIEND, 30-YEAR-OLD AARON MICHAEL PITTMAN, BOTH OF CYPRESS, TEXAS, WERE FOUND IN THE CASINO DRINKING AFTER HAVING HAD A MEAL.  THEY WERE BOTH BOOKED INTO THE JEFF DAVIS PARISH JAIL ON CHARGES OF CRUELTY TO A JUVENILE.

 

AUTHORITIES IN IBERIA PARISH ARE SEARCHING FOR A VEHICLE OF INTEREST IN CONNECTION WITH A SUSPECTED HOMICIDE.  SUNDAY AFTERNOON THE BODY OF 40-YEAR-OLD JARRAD CANNAN OF PATTERSON WAS FOUND IN A DITCH NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF OLD JEANERETTE ROAD AND BAYSIDE ROAD.  DETECTIVES ARE SEARCHING FOR A 2019 KIA SORRENTO WITH AN OREGON LICENSE PLATE WITH THE NUMBER 460KVR.  IF YOU’VE SEEN THIS VEHICLE, YOU ARE ASKED TO CALL 364-TIPS.

 

West Nile virus cases in Louisiana are way down from a year ago but the state epidemiologist says people statewide still need to protect themselves against mosquitoes.  Dr. Raoult Ratard (rah-OOHL ruh-TAHR) says it’s not clear why this year’s numbers are down.  Louisiana Department of Health statistics show 12 cases through last week, compared to 79 by the same week in 2018.  That includes six cases of dangerous nervous system infections, down from 48 at this time last year.
