Two members of the governing council in Lafayette are pushing a resolution critical of the local library’s plan to host a “Drag Queen Story Hour.”  The resolution by Lafayette City-Parish Councilmen Jared Bellard and William Theriot is to be considered by the council tomorrow.  The Advertiser of Lafayette reports that the resolution states that the event, aimed at young children “is not an age-appropriate educational event.”  The event at the Lafayette Public Library is set for Oct. 6.

 

LAKE CHARLES POLICE WITH HELP FROM THE CAMERON PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN CONNECTION WITH A HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT THAT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER NINTH JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT.  POLICE RECEIVED A TIP THAT THE SUSPECT VEHICLE WAS LOCATED BEHIND A RESIDENCE IN CAMERON WHICH LED TO THE ARREST OF HAYDEN WAYNE MARTIN.  MARTIN IS ACCUSED OF TURNING IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AT THE INTERSECTION OF MCNEESE AND SALE LANE.  HIS VEHICLE WAS HIT BY A MOTORCYCLIST BUT MARTIN ALLEGEDLY FLED THE SCENE, LEAVING THE INJURED MOTORCYCLIST LYING IN THE STREET.

A BICYLIST WAS HIT BY A VEHICLE LAST NIGHT IN LAFAYETTE.  IT HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER EIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF GUILBEAU AND JOHNSTON STREET.  A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAYS THE BICYCLIST WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH SEVERE INJURIES.  THE CRASH IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BUT POLICE DO NOT SUSPECT IMPAIRMENT TO BE A FACTOR.

 

A Lake Charles’ high school’s homecoming court told fifth-graders at three schools about their own problems with weight, teeth, acne, body hair and other social troubles.  A senior who came to Lake Charles from Lebanon tells the younger students that in elementary school, she was shy, couldn’t speak English and got bullied because of her heritage.  The American Press reports that Ilham Chloun (IL-hahm KLOON) is now leader of the senior section at Barbe High School football games and she says, “You have to make a voice for yourself.”  Sponsor Deidra Fitzgerald says she came up with the idea to bring new meaning to the court.

U-L’S NEW IBERIA RESEARCH STATION IS SEARCHING FOR A MONKEY THAT ESCAPED.  THE TWELVE POUND RHESUS MACAQUE WENT MISSING ON SATURDAY.  IN A FACEBOOK POST, THE UNIVERSITY SAYS THE MONKEY WAS BORN AT THE CENTER AND IS PART OF A BREEDING GROUP WHICH DOESN’T CARRY DISEASES.  THEY SAY THE MONKEY IS USED TO PEOPLE BUT SHOULD NOT BE APPROACHED.

 

ROAD CREWS HAVE BEGUN INSTALLING CABLE BARRIERS ALONG I-TEN IN JEFF DAVIS PARISH.  THEY ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT VEHICLES FROM CROSSING THE MEDIAN INTO ONCOMING LANES.  THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND DEVELOPMENT SAYS CONTRACTORS BEGAN TESTING AND RECORDING THE TENSION IN THE CABLES LAST WEEK.  THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR.

 

CROWLEY POLICE ARE ASKING THE PUBLIC’S HELP TO FIND A SUSPECT IN A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED ON AUGUST 26TH AT AROUND ONE A-M IN THE 100 BLOCK OF WEST THIRD STREET.  A RESIDENT HEARD A NOISE AT THE FRONT DOOR AND, WHILE APPROACHING THAT AREA, SHOTS WERE FIRED THROUGH THE DOOR, STRIKING THE VICTIM IN THE HAND.  POLICE BELIEVE THE SUSPECT WAS ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE LIGHT FROM THE FRONT DOOR AREA IN PREPARATION FOR A ROBBERY.  THE VICTIM DESCRIBED THE SUSPECT AS A BLACK MALE IN HIS TWENTIES TO EARLY THIRTIES.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL CRIME STOPPERS OF ACADIA PARISH AT 789-TIPS.
