YOUNGSVILLE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING AT A HOME THAT LEFT ONE PERSON IN THE HOSPITAL.  GEORGE FAUST REPORTS.

SAINT MARY PARISH SCHOOLS WILL REOPEN TODAY, EXCEPT FOR AUCOIN ELEMENTARY IN AMELIA.  SUPERINTENDENT BUFFY FEGENBUSH SAYS  ELECTRICITY IS STILL A CONCERN FOR SOME FAMILIES AND STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE UNIFORMS READILY AVAILABLE CAN WEAR SCHOOL APPROPRIATE CLOTHING.  SHE SAYS THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS WORKING WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO ASSIST FAMILIES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.  ALSO, STEPHENSVILLE ELEMENTARY, WHICH WAS THE ONLY SCHOOL IN SAINT MARTIN PARISH THAT DIDN’T REOPEN FRIDAY, WILL OPEN TODAY.

 

TWO WESTLAKE OFFICERS WERE FIRED LAST MONTH AFTER ALLEGATIONS WERE MADE ABOUT HARRASSMENT AND RACIAL REMARKS TOWARDS CO-WORKERS.  POLICE CHIEF CHRIS WILRYE SAYS HE RECEIVED COMPLAINTS FROM EMPLOYEES ABOUT WORKING CONDITIONS AND CALLED ON THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO INVESTIGATE.  THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE INTERNAL AFFAIRS DIVISION SUSTAINED THE ALLEGATIONS OF CONDUCT AS INSUBORDINATE, HARASSING AND UNBECOMING OF AN OFFICER.  THE OFFICERS, TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL BOUDREAUX AND THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER CLARK, WERE FIRED ON AUGUST NINETEENTH.

 

THE OBESITY RATE IN LOUISIANA IS AT FORTY PERCENT, ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL.  THAT’S UP FROM THIRTY-THREE PERCENT IN TWENTY-THIRTEEN AND IT WAS BELOW TWENTY PERCENT IN THE NINETEEN-NINETIES.  EXPERTS ATTRIBUTE THE RISE TO GENETIC FACTORS AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES.  LOUISIANA RANKS FOURTH IN THE NATION IN THE OBESITY RATE, BEHIND ARKANSAS, MISSISSIPPI AND WEST VIRGINIA.

 

A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD BOY WAS ARRESTED FRIDAY IN CONNECTION TO A BARBERSHOP SHOOTING ON AUGUST THIRTY-FIRST IN LAFAYETTE.  POLICE RELEASED THE NAME OF THE BOY, WHICH IS JEFFREY BROUSSARD OF LAFAYETTE.  HE’S BEEN CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND IS BEING HELD IN THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER.  TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN THE SHOOTING, FORTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD JOHNNY TRAILER JUNIOR AND NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD QUINCY DUHON JUNIOR.

 

FORMER SAINT THOMAS MOORE AND NORTH VERMILLION HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER JACOB DE LA PAZ WAS SENTENCED FRIDAY TO SEVEN YEARS IN A FEDERAL PRISON.  HE WAS ACCUSED OF SENDING AN EXPLICIT VIDEO TO A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD THAT HE WAS TUTORING.  A JURY FOUND HIM GUILTY OF ATTEMPTED POSSESSION OF CHILD PORN.  THE JURY WAS HUNG ON THE CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED PRODUCTION OF CHILD PORN AND THE JUDGE DECLARED A MISTRIAL ON THAT CHARGE.

 

STATE CREWS WILL BE COMPLETING WORK THIS WEEK ON THE I-TEN LIGHTING SYSTEM IN JENNINGS.  THE LIGHTING SYSTEM WILL BE REPLACED BY ENERGY-EFFICIENT ALTERNATIVES.  THE LEFT LANE OF I-TEN WESTBOUND AT THE L-A TWENTY-SIX INTERCHANGE IN JENNINGS WILL BE CLOSED TONIGHT AND TOMORROW NIGHT FROM SEVEN P-M TO FIVE A-M.  THE FOLLOWING TWO NIGHTS DURING THOSE SAME HOURS. THE LEFT LANE OF I-TEN EASTBOUND WILL BE CLOSED AS WELL AT THAT INTERCHANGE.

 

HEROES EVERYWHERE ANIMAL RESCUE IN VILLE PLATTE IS MAKING STRIDES IN PUTTING UP THREE NEW BUILDINGS TO HOUSE STRAY ANIMALS.  MATT AND BRE BAKER STARTED THE ANIMAL RESCUE ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO AND HAVE PROVIDED CARE FOR MORE THAN SIXTY STRAY AND ABANDONED DOGS.  MATT TELLS KLFY-TV THEY ARE MAKING PROGRESS IN GETTING THE FACILITY PUT TOGETHER AND RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM THE PUBLIC.  THEY’RE HOSTING AN EVENT ON SEPTEMBER TWENTY-NINTH THAT WILL PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO SPEND TIME WITH THE ANIMAL RESCUE AND SEE WHAT IT TAKES TO SUSTAIN THE RESCUED DOGS.
