The elected police chief of Kaplan has been arrested for stealing town money.  Louisiana State Police arrested Kaplan Police Chief Boyd Adams Monday, on charges related to theft and malfeasance in office.  Master Trooper Brooks E. David, a State Police spokesman, says Adams couldn’t provide receipts for $19,000 in spending. David says investigators determined Adams took more than $7,000.

 

RODERICK CAWTHORNE JUNIOR WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR THE SECOND DEGREE MURDER OF A LAKE ARTHUR MAN AND AN ADDITIONAL FORTY YEARS FOR TRYING TO COVER UP THE CRIME.  TWO YEARS AGO, 73-YEAR-OLD CHARLES R. TALEN SENIOR WAS BEATEN TO DEATH IN HIS HOME AND ROBBED OF AN ESTIMATED 100 THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF GOLD COINS AND OTHER ITEMS.  JEFF DAVIS DISTRICT ATTORNEY MIKE CASSIDY SAYS CAWTHORNE GOT THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE BECAUSE OF THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED AT TRIAL AND FOR HIS LACK OF REMORSE.  CAWTHORNE WAS 18 AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME.

 

THE PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS HELD A COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY AT PARC SAN SOUCI IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE YESTERDAY TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH, 2001.  THEY WERE JOINED BY LAFAYETTE FIREFIGHTERS IN A PROCESSION FROM CAJUN FIELD TO PARC SAN SOUCI.  THE CEREMONY PAID TRIBUTE TO THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO DIED THAT DAY IN A TERRORIST ATTACK.  IT WAS THE SINGLE DEADLIEST DAY FOR FIRE FIGHTERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT IN U-S HISTORY.

 

A new audit says Louisiana’s Medicaid program improperly paid $4.2 million for laboratory services and tests that shouldn’t have been covered.  Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera’s office reviewed payments over five years, between July 2011, and June 2016. The auditors said the $4.2 million was paid by the health department and private managed-care companies who administer health plans for many of Louisiana’s Medicaid recipients. The report says the department didn’t monitor the managed-care companies to ensure their lab payments are in compliance with their state contracts.

 

A MORGAN CITY MAN WAS SENTENCED TO TWENTY YEARS IN PRISON FOR HIS ROLE IN THE THEFT OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM CAPITAL MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS.  63-YEAR-OLD ARMOND DUHON WAS CONVICTED THIS SUMMER ON RACKATEERING, MONEY LAUNDEERING AND MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED COUNTS OF THEFT.  HE IS ACCUSED OF STEALING 773 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM SEVERAL ACCOUNTS BELONGING TO CAPITAL MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS IN MORGAN CITY.  DUHON’S WIFE, KAREN, IS ONE OF THE DEFENDANTS IN ONE OF TWO LAWSUITS FILED BY THE COMPANY AGAINST FORMER EMPLOYEES AND OTHERS, WHO ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE STOLEN BETWEEN 15 AND THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS.

 

A court filing shows a now-retired federal judge based in Lake Charles took medical leave for treatment of severe alcoholism more than seven months after court officials in Louisiana received a complaint questioning her ability to serve on the bench.  An order signed last month by the chief judge for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says the court appointed a committee to investigate the April 2016 complaint about U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi’s “possible disability.”  An Associated Press investigation showed Minaldi’s pattern of unusual behavior on the bench preceding her removal from a string of cases last year.  Minaldi continued handling cases until she took medical leave in December.

 

A LOAN COMPANY IN LAFAYETTE WAS ROBBED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON BY AN ARMED MAN.  CORPORAL KARL RATCLIFF SAYS A MAN ENTERED DEEP SOUTH LOAN ON WILLOW STREET WITH A FIREARM AND DEMANDED MONEY.  HE FLED WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF MONEY.  ANYONE WHO HAS INFORMATION ON THE CRIME IS ASKED TO CALL THE LAFAYETTE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

THE HEAD OF THE L-S-U AGCENTER SOUTHWEST REGION IS RETIRING AT THE END OF THE MONTH.  STEVE LINSCOMBE HAS BEEN WITH THE AGCENTER FOR 35 YEARS.  HIS REPLACEMENT WILL BE KURT GUIDRY, A PROFESSOR IN THE L-S-U AGCENTER DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND AGRIBUSINESS, AND A NATIVE OF CROWLEY.  HE’LL WORK OUT OF THE H ROUSE CAFFEY RICE RESEARCH STATION IN CROWLEY, ONE OF THREE RESEARCH STATIONS IN THE SOUTHWEST REGION, WHICH COVERS 14 PARISHES.
