The Louisiana Supreme Court has granted a stay in the second-degree murder trial of a 56-year-old man accused of shooting a Lake Charles pastor. Woodrow Karey Jr. was scheduled to go on trial today. He is accused of walking into Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center during a revival service on Sept. 27, 2013, and shooting 51-year-old Rev. Ronald Harris Sr. twice. Defense attorney Todd Clemons of Lake Charles says the trial remains on hold until the high court rules on whether Karey should be charged with murder or the lesser crime of manslaughter.

The head of the Louisiana State Police has quietly received a 32 percent pay hike that raised his annual salary by more than $43,000. Col. Mike Edmonson’s pay was boosted to more than $177,000 last month. Salary hikes also were given to at least four of Edmonson’s top deputies and the state fire marshal, whose office is under Edmonson’s Department of Public Safety. Edmonson says the salary bumps make state police pay competitive with other law enforcement agencies around Louisiana.

Another 10 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Health said Friday that brings the total to 24 cases in the state this year. Of the latest cases, five are dangerous infections of the brain or other parts of the nervous system and five were flu-like West Nile fever.
One of the latest neuro-invasive cases was in Calcasieu parish and one of the fever cases was in Jefferson Davis parish.

Louisiana’s state economic development agency says August’s devastating flooding caused more than $2 billion in damage to businesses. The office, known as LED, commissioned a damage assessment and released the findings on Friday, saying more than 6,000 businesses in 22 parishes took in floodwaters. LED estimates nearly 20,000 business’ operations were interrupted. The agency says at the peak of the flooding, about 278,000 Louisiana residents couldn’t work because of office closures, business operation suspensions, transportation problems or other disruptions.
