Parts of southwest Louisiana could face flash floods as the slow-moving storm battering Texas continues to dump rain on both states.  National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Erickson says around 10 to 15 inches of rain inundated Lake Charles and Cameron over the weekend.  He said rainfall is expected to expand further east in the region through Tuesday.  Intense rainfall may overwhelm local drainage systems. A flash flood watch remains in effect through Thursday evening for most of  Southwest Louisiana and Acadiana.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORTS TWO TORNADOES TOUCHED DOWN IN ACADIANA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  USING PHOTOS SENT TO THEM, FORECASTERS DETERMINED AS BEST AS THEY ARE ABLE THAT TORNADOES WERE NORTH OF ERATH AND NEAR LYDIA IN IBERIA PARISH.  ALSO YESTERDAY, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUED A FLOOD WARNING FOR THE MERMENTAU RIVER WEST OF CROWLEY. IN VERMILLION PARISH, THE BRIDGE ON L-A 3147, WHICH CROSSES THE HUMBLE CANAL, WAS CLOSED BECAUSE OF HIGH WATER.

 

VOLUNTEERS WITH THE CAJUN NAVY, WHICH DREW PRAISE FOR THEIR WORK DURING LAST YEAR’S FLOODS, ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THEY ARE HEADED TO TEXAS TO HELP IN RESCUE EFFORTS.  GOVERNOR JOHN BEL EDWARDS HAS ALSO SENT THREE TEAMS OF TEN LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES AGENTS TO TEXAS, AND TWO PEOPLE FROM THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE COMPACT ADVANCE TEAM IN LOUISANA HAVE ALSO BEEN DEPLOYED.  EDWARDS NOTED HOW TEXAS HAS COME TO THE AID OF LOUISIANA DURING WEATHER CRISES OVER THE YEARS AND LOUISIANA WANTS TO RETURN THE FAVOR.  HE SAYS LOUISIANAN’S, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN THE SOUTHWEST PART OF THE STATE, NEED TO REMAIN VIGILANT BECAUSE THE STORM STILL HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE LIFE THREATENING FLOODING OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS.

 

A COUPLE FROM YOUNGSVILLE, WHO WENT TO HOUSTON FOR A MAJOR MEDICAL PROCEDURE, ARE STRANDED THERE BECAUSE OF THE FLOODS.  25-YEAR-OLD GARRETT BAUDOIN WENT LAST WEEK TO HAVE A BRAIN TUMOR REMOVED AT MEMORIAL HERMANN HOSPITAL, AND HIS GIRLFRIEND, 23-YEAR-OLD TIFFANY BOUDREAUX, TRAVELED THERE TO BE WITH HIM AS HE RECOVERED.  TIFFANY, WHO IS THE NIECE OF YOUNGSVILLE POLICE CHIEF RICKEY BOUDREAUX, IS STRANDED AT THE COURTYARD MARRIOTT.  SHE TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT THE WATER IN THE PARKING LOT, AS OF YESTERDAY, WAS UP TO THE DOOR HANDLES OF THE CARS.

 

Massive flooding caused by Harvey along Texas’ refinery-rich coast could have long-standing and far-reaching consequences for the state’s oil and gas industry and the larger U.S. economy.  The storm’s remnants left much of Houston underwater on Sunday, and the National Weather Service says it’s not over yet: Some parts of Houston and its suburbs could end up with as much as 50 inches of rain.  Key oil and gas facilities along the Texas Gulf Coast have temporarily shut down, and flooding in the Houston and Beaumont areas could seriously pinch gasoline supplies. Experts believe gasoline prices could increase as much as 25 cents a gallon.

 

The man accused of shooting a Lake Charles pastor has been released from jail, after four years behind bars and no trial.  The American Press reports Woodrow Karey Jr. was released Thursday when state District Judge Clayton Davis reduced his bond from $500,000 to $50,000.  Karey is accused of walking into the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center during a revival service Sept. 27, 2013, and shooting 51-year-old Rev. Ronald Harris Sr. twice. Karey surrendered, claiming Harris had raped his wife

 

THERE WAS A MASSIVE HOUSE FIRE IN DELCAMBRE LATE SUNDAY EVENING.  NEIGHBORS HAVE TOLD KLFY NEWS THAT NO ONE WAS BELIEVED TO BE IN THE HOME WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE.  POLICE CHIEF JAMES BROUSSARD SAYS MULTIPLE FIRE AGENCIES WORKED TOGETHER TO PUT OUT THE BLAZE, AND THE VERMILLION PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE ASSISTED AS WELL.  THERE’S NO WORD YET ON THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE.
